Bungie reduces contact with the Destiny 2 community after threats

Bungie has confirmed that it has deliberately reduced its contacts with Fate 2 society after excessive harassment and threats directed at the studio. Bungie has always been a very transparent studio, even going back to its days in the Halo series. Not only will it actively engage with the community through special in-game events and content, but it will also release things like vidocs, which have been behind-the-scenes videos highlighting their game development. They’ve been incredibly well received and a breath of fresh air for a well-known secret industry that pretty much has to keep things tight due to the ever-changing nature of game development.

However, Bungie has been less involved with its community in recent weeks and months. Bungie Community Manager Dylan Gafner, aka DMG in the Community, Reddit took over to talk About why the studio has fallen back on its regular means of communication. Gavner indicated that he is on personal leave from the company at the present time, after the threats directed against him and his family specifically. Bungie recently sued a Destiny player named Luca Leone after telling Gafner it wouldn’t be “safe,” among many other things. In the aforementioned Reddit post, Gafner noted that the team is planning “future protection/strategies” to avoid such incidents in the future. He also stated that this is not meant to be a punishment for well-behaved community members and that the team is actively planning ways to communicate with the community once everything has been straightened out.

No timetable was given, but Gafner indicated that it could take weeks or months. The situation highlights an ongoing problem in the industry with regard to harassment. Just weeks ago, the developers started God of War Ragnarok Notice how they got teased about the game’s yet to be announced release date. Shortly after this incident, the game’s release date was officially announced, although it was not the result of harassment.
