Fashion designers from “Pam and Tommy” and “White Lotus” about creating unique looks

From rewinding the ’90s in Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy” to designing for a gay ride in “Hacks,” Emmy-nominated fashion designers have delivered a wealth of contemporary looks.

Cameron Lennox earned her first nomination for “Pam & Tommy,” which set audiences back two decades as Lily James and Sebastian Stan obsessed with the unruly antics and looks of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee.

Mastering the iconic “Baywatch” red swimsuit was a must. The original suit was made by swimwear TYR, who was not only able to accurately match the color red but also helped her find the right fabric and cut. “At Pam, the way it was cut was very exciting,” Lennox says. “The leg was high to elongate her leg and low cut at the sides to accentuate her bust.”

Meanwhile, rock star Lee wore a plethora of thongs around the house, so Lennox turned to eBay to buy vintage leopard prints, silks, and satins in an array of colors to dress up her leading man.

At one point, Linux got into a bidding war. “Someone else was trying to buy the same thong. I ended up winning because I was so determined.”

Euphoria’s Heidi Bivens has taken advantage of this season’s fantasy elements to push the boundaries of her characters’ outfits. Cassie wants Sidney Sweeney, who is trying to figure out who she is and who she wishes she could be, for people to view her as she presents herself. To wear Cassie, Bivens gravitated towards social media heavy brands like House of CB and trendy labels like WAYF and Realization Par. “She looks at a lot of other people in the world, whether it’s on social media or other people,” Bevins says.

For HBO’s The White Lotus, Alex Bovaird put together a custom-designed dresser for each guest. Tania was from Jennifer Coolidge, a wealthy woman grieving over her complicated relationship with her late mother, the Kaftan Queen. “She screams eccentric costume lady, but I didn’t want to direct her into the field of jokes either because she plays that well,” says Bouverd. “We wanted to sympathize with Tanya. We didn’t want to laugh at her. It was about trying to balance, yeah, she’s eccentric, loud, and ostentatious, but I don’t want to overdo it.”

Kathleen Felix-Hager obtained scripts for HBO Max’s Hacks early on which let her know that an episode of Lesbian Journey was coming. Ava (Hannah Einbender) costume was based on what she would have brought with her on the realistic road. “I saw that blouse and duster so early on and knew I wanted her to wear it when I first went on this cruise ship,” says Felix Hager, with a Jean Smart look as Deborah.

Michelle Cole was honored to dress in the costumes of the first lady, Michelle Obama, for the season opener of ABC’s “Black-ish.” Cole’s goal was to see what Obama and actress Tracy Ellis Ross would wear, ensuring that both women stood out on their own. She teamed up with Obama’s personal stylist, Meredith Cope, to choose a purple look for Sergio Hudson, while Ross wore head-to-toe red. The ruffled neck piece on Ross was designed by former “Project Runway” contestant Stanley Hudson. Cole says the stylish look came from the women. “It’s about how you wear it.”

Dana Covarrubias added excitement to Selena Gomez’s outfit in Hulu’s “The Only Murder in the Building.” Her character Mabel Mora is a New York City “It” girl – effortless in her style and relaxed in her power. “The yellow-fur opener look is a perfect blend of new and old, sophistication and creativity,” says Covarrubias. The color of the velor used in Mabel’s wardrobe is a nod to her Mexican roots and the plaid fabrics are a tribute to the famous deer hat worn by Sherlock Holmes.
