The New York Yankees are looking to start bidding on the trade deadline, and have one player high on their priority list.
The first major dominoes in the deadline for an MLB 2022 swap came from the New York Yankees, as they acquired Kansas City Royals player Andrew Benentende in exchange for three minor league bowlers. Since they didn’t give up any of the top 15 potential players in the deal, they’re probably far from done. The next area of interest is the beginning, and they seem to have a priority list.
The latest MLB Insider John Heyman New York Post Article – Commodity, writes that the Yankees “thrown a wide net for beginners” and notes that they’re at Frankie Montas of Oakland Athletics. Heyman, however, goes on to say that Luis Castillo of the Cincinnati Reds “appears to be their first choice.”

Besides these two, Hyman mentioned Noah Sendergaard of the Los Angeles Angels as their third choice, and Jose Quintana of the Pittsburgh Pirates as “top of the list.”
During the athletics sale ahead of the 2022 season, Montas was seen as a dependent acquisition on the trade deadline. The thing is, his stock took a slight hit when he was put on the casualty list earlier this month with an infection in his right shoulder. However, it is getting attention only days before the deadline.
As for Castillo, the Yankees got a first-hand look at what he’s capable of when he started against them in the Bronx on July 14. Victory 7-6.
This season, Castillo has recorded 2.86 ERA, 1,071 WHIP, 90 strikes, and 28 walks over 85.0 innings (14 starts).
There is no doubt that the Yankees will face stiff competition for the services of Castillo. But, with the window of competition for the World Championships wide open this season, they have to make a big move for beginners. Whether it will be Castillo, Montas or another name remains to be seen.
