Why is WWE SummerSlam taking place on Saturday?

WWE SummerSlam 2022 takes place on Saturday, July 30th at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, which is why WWE has moved its premium live events away from Sundays and Saturdays.

WWE SummerSlam arrives on Saturday, July 30th. There will be eight matches on the card, including Roman Reigns against Brock Lesnar in the final permanent match for the WWE Undisputed World Championship.

For WWE fans, they may have noticed a trend that the majority of their premium live events have taken place on Saturdays rather than Sundays as in the past.

Why is WWE SummerSlam held on a Saturday?

Back in November 2021, Nick Kahn, president and chief revenue officer, and now current co-CEO, spoke on the company’s third-quarter earnings call about the change in their approach to pay-per-view events. This included holding shows on Saturdays and putting them in stadiums for the 2022 schedule.

The quote can be read below, h/t fight:

“One area we have spent the last year examining is our strategic pay-per-view approach. We have looked at all parts of this work and are making adjustments that we believe will enhance our results by making each pay-per-view special, not just as content but in all things surrounding each event. As Back in the last quarter, we recently announced our pay-per-view calendar for 2022. Dates, cities, and places.

“For the first time in our history, we are hosting a minimum of four pay-per-view nights at a stadium in the United States. First, the Royal Rumble on January 29 at the Dome at America Center in St. Louis, a Saturday night where there are no real competitive programming on the sports calendar. Usually, we did the Royal Rumble a week later during the Pro Bowl weekend. This year, we wanted to support our NBCU partners and not face the Winter Olympics. For now, ticket sales are still off the charts, track as well as this year’s SummerSlam, as we ended up gateway Quadruple the SummerSlam 2019 gate, a clear sign of the value of bringing support events to the key venues on the right Lille Next, in relation to stadium events, a two-night WrestleMania at AT&T Stadium in Dallas Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3. In 2016 at the Stadium ATT&T We Had Over 100,000 Fans At WrestleMania Let’s See What Two Nights At The Super Bowl Bring In. Our Event In The Stadium Next Five Pay-Per-View event Money in the Bank will be back the weekend of 4 July, in Allegi ant Stadium in Las Vegas. More than 400,000 people are expected to travel to Las Vegas this weekend to celebrate the fourth. Expect to see many of them at Money in the Bank. About a month later, SummerSlam is at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, again, on Saturday, July 30. Have you been to Nashville in the summer at the weekend? It’s thriving and growing and we’re growing with it SummerSlam. What we found from last SummerSlam in Las Vegas, out of the more than 50,000 attendees, not a single ticket was purchased from Tennessee. Not one. Lots of similarities between these two cities on weekends, and there isn’t a lot of crossover between these two cities on weekends. A strong market to buy tickets in each of them for us to take advantage of and grow in.”

The majority of WWE’s premium live events are held on Saturdays. There have been a few exceptions, such as Night 2 of WrestleMania 38 (April 3), WrestleMania Backlash (May 8), and Hell in a Cell (June 5).

There are four distinct live events remaining in the calendar year following SummerSlam. They will all take place on Saturday. You can see the dates in the list below:

  • Clash in the castle, Saturday 3 September
  • Strict rules, Saturday 8 October
  • Crown Jewel, Saturday 5 November
  • Survivor Series, Saturday 26 November
