Next PS5 update to remove untapped social feature

Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5 console update will remove a social feature that gamers have primarily not used. When the PS5 first launched in 2020, it included a number of new features that weren’t present with the PS4. Some of these features were highly sought after by fans, but others went unnoticed. Now, it looks like Sony has decided to remove one of these new aspects of the console that no one has found interest in.

In a new message on the official PlayStation websiteSony has revealed that it will be canceling the “Accolades” feature on the PS5 later this year. For those unaware, Accolades was a system on the PS5 that allowed players to see how others behave in multiplayer or social games. Basically, players can give each other some rewards like ‘help’, ‘welcome’ or ‘good sport’ to inform others what kind of people are in the online spaces. The goal of this system was to “encourage the best members to recognize positive influences”. As Sony has made clear, though, no one appears to be using this system to ensure its continued existence.

Sony clearly stated in a new update: “In the fall of 2022, the Accolades feature will no longer be supported on PlayStation 5. The feature hasn’t seen the level of usage we expected, so we’re refocusing our efforts.” “We encourage the community to continue to send positive messages to each other.”

Overall, this isn’t a very shocking move to see coming from PlayStation. We’ve seen Sony break ties in the past with other system features on the PS3 and PS4 that haven’t been working as intended, so it’s no surprise to see the same thing happening now for Accolades. Given the lack of use of the feature as well, it makes sense that most people wouldn’t even know that it will disappear when it is removed from PS5 consoles. Then again, if you are someone who loved the system, you should use it to your heart’s content in the last months of its availability.

How do you feel about Sony removing this Accolades feature from all PS5 consoles? Is this something you’ve used before, or did you not even know it existed? Let me know either down in the comments or hit me up on Twitter at Trustworthy.
