Before Walker First shown on The CW, in early footage we learned that the Jared Padalecki-led series was about a Texas Ranger mourning the death of his wife and his journey to justice. The second season of the show saw Cordell slowly start dating again, including his old friend Jerry O’Fremy Twila. However, when it comes to his love life, it seems that Cordell is still holding back. Ahead of Season 3’s soon-to-be ‘struggles’, Walker Presenter Anna Frick mentioned that this is all part of his journey — even if she pissed off her mother in the process.
Showrunner Anna Fricke has discussed the possibility of Cordell and Jerry getting back together TVLine. Although it would be nice to see the two of them together again, she did mention that it will take some time because Cordell is still recovering from losing his wife. She even picked up some freaking out from her mom about what happened last season, but she’s defending WalkerCreative options.
Listen, my mom was so upset when he tried to move on [with Twyla]. I’ve heard about it. I feel bad when I say I always try to thwart it [Walker and Geri]. I’m not. I really believe in Walker and Jerry, and I feel like they have to win each other over. And I also think, both at the origin and at the end, that Walker’s origin story, at least as we know him, is as a widow, a sad man. We can’t lose sight of it, that it doesn’t bounce right away. This is a man who has suffered a huge loss in his life, his children have suffered a huge loss, and so it will take some time for him to become the person I think he needs to become in order to truly allow love.
Frick might have had to defend moving on to her mom, but look, I get it. It makes sense that it will take a while for Cordell to really “let love in.” The whole premise of the series was about this widower trying to solve his wife’s murder case, how sad he was and how grieving his entire family was. Although we’ve seen him from time to time, making him take some time to figure out what he wants and seeing this journey will be beneficial to him in the end.
Plus, at least at the start of Season 3, Cordell has much bigger things to worry about. In the final few minutes of the season two finale, after it seemed like things were going to return to normal, Cordell disappeared and ended up unconscious in the back of a truck. After the ending, Anna Frick disturbs Cordell’s fate and hints at something from his past haunting him. What this is and how it affects it moving forward is unknown, but fans will surely find out when the third season premieres.
It’s hard to tell how the story will go on to address Cordell’s past, though I personally hope we’ll see his wife again. In fact, Jared Padalecki’s wife Genevieve portrays his character’s late wife, and bringing her back can help him relive his memories and get to a point where he “becomes the person” he needs in order to “let love in” again. In short, with network TV starting or about to start again, there are a lot of factors to consider in terms of text! Maybe her mom should give her up for a bit?
