Diane Warren apologizes to Beyoncé after rejecting the song with 24 writers

Academy Award-nominated songwriting legend Diane Warren has made an enemy of his legions of Beyoncé fans after questioning why one of the singer’s new songs from her “Renaissance” album had over 20 writers. Warren didn’t mention Beyoncé in her initial tweets but wrote, “How can there be 24 writers on a song?…That’s not shadow, I’m just curious.”

Beyoncé fans assumed Warren was calling out “Alien Superstar,” the third track on “Renaissance” that features more than 20 songwriters. As Warren later pointed out, one of the reasons the song is credited to many writers is the samples and interpolations it features.

The Dream, who has worked with Beyoncé in the past and collaborated with her again on “Renaissance,” invited Warren for a comment. “You mean how our (black) culture has so many writers?” to reply. “Well, it started because we couldn’t afford to start certain things, so we started sampling and it became an art form, a major part of black culture (hip hop) in America. If that era didn’t happen who knows. You’re good?”

Warren replied, “I didn’t mean it as offensive or disrespectful.” “I didn’t know this, thank you for letting me know. I don’t have to be mean about it.”

Warren then issued an apology to Beyoncé, who had previously collaborated with her on the song “I Was Here” from the singer’s album “4.”

“Well, I meant no disrespect for Beyoncé, who I worked with and admired,” Warren tweeted. “I’m sorry for the misunderstanding.”

Beyoncé has not publicly addressed any of Warren’s comments. Warren is a 13-time Oscar nominee in the Original Song category and will receive an Honorary Oscar later this year.
