Marvel typically chooses to keep its heroes and villains looking similar to how they all appear in the comic book source material. That changed when it came to Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, an opponent who wore a completely different look when he debuted in the live-action world. Thor: Love and Thunder. As it turns out, there was a concept art designed by Marvel Studios that shows the sports character with a look similar to the version that was introduced in ox Comedy written by Jason Aaron and Esad Rebek.
Visual development artist at Marvel Studios, Jackson Sze, revealed an artistic concept he drew for the character before Bell entered the equation. “Referring to the source of the great comedic material, I mostly wanted to paint a picture in cold light,” the artist said on Tuesday afternoon. “Thank you to Andy Park for leading the show and it’s always been great working with him!”
Bell previously told ComicBook.com that he wasn’t in the right shape to get Gorr’s comically exact look, so the studio and its artists came up with something else.
“I was getting out of a movie where I had to be kind of short on muscle,” Bell explained. “Then I saw the pictures and thought, ‘Okay, that’s not going to be possible… and this thing that’s going on over there.'” He looked through the comic books like he was physically, you know, someone to reckon with. And I said, ‘Well, you know, that wouldn’t be possible in the state I’m in.’ And we have three days between finishing one movie and going to Australia for quarantine and so on.
