Elvis Presley: Priscilla ‘stayed away’ from King during the Hollywood years before infidelity | music | entertainment

Later this month, Elvis Presley’s biography – Elvis – arrives for a home rental. But the blockbuster movie did not provide all the details about the king’s relationship with his wife.

After Elvis first brought Priscilla Presley (Beaulieu at the time) to Graceland in 1963, he started growing far. He started working hard in his career again after spending a few years in the US Army.

But he wasn’t touring and playing music, he was making films in Hollywood. Colonel Tom Parker thought the best way to make money was to hit the silver screen as a movie star. But that means turning away from his partner.

While Elvis ventured to visit Hawaii, Hollywood, and other locations across the United States to shoot films, Priscilla was left in Memphis. She had all of Graceland to herself to live her own life.

While the distance between them eventually became an issue in their relationship, Priscilla looked back at why she wouldn’t venture out to Hollywood to see the star.

“I didn’t think he could do his best if I was around,” she said. “I felt like this was his job, his work, and it wasn’t where I was going to be there.”

Instead, she filled her time by living her solitary life in Graceland.

“I stayed most of the time in Memphis and spent my time in the dance studio,” she recalls. “Or I went to dinner with a girlfriend.”

As bleak as this may sound, she added, “I was perfectly happy for what it was.” (via Ladies Home Journal)

So it makes sense that she was pissed when she found out about one infamous affair.

A year after moving in with Priscilla, Elvis began an infamous affair with Anne Margaret on the set of Viva Las Vegas.

The actors enjoyed a relationship for a little over a year before news reports finally came out.

Priscilla recalled that the star had bought entire premises to woo her.

“Elvis is going to rent an entire theater,” she said. “Invite friends, and we will talk loudly to each other without worrying that the manager will fire us.”

Here Priscilla learned a lot about Elvis and his love for cinema.

She remembers: “Elvis liked good action-packed movies, and some westerns. And he liked A Shot in the Dark with Peter Sellers.”

But there were some films he refused to show to his friends during these events.

“No, Elvis never showed his films,” Priscilla said sternly. “He just preferred not to see them. Maybe he didn’t say a line right or thought his hair didn’t look good, or he looked fat.”

She added, “He just doesn’t want to see himself. He’s very self-critical.”

In 1967, Elvis and Priscilla married on May 1. Nine months later – on February 1, 1968 – Priscilla gave birth to Lisa Marie Presley.

Eight years later, in 1973, Elvis and Priscilla divorced.
