Kristina Speed to take over as CEO of AMC Networks

Kristina Speed, a veteran media executive who was formerly ViacomCBS’s chief financial officer, has been named the new CEO of AMC Networks, tasked with leading a small but influential media company through a difficult time in the media space. She has replaced Matt Blank, a Showtime veteran who was the company’s interim CEO, and will assume her new responsibilities on September 9.

“I am delighted that Chris is taking over as our new CEO,” James Dolan, President of AMC Networks, said in a statement. “She is a proven leader with a proven track record of driving transformational change in media and entertainment and I am confident she has the experience and vision to guide AMC Networks to greater success.”

Spade will take over the company as it has been ramping up its broadband and live streaming business. While AMC Networks is best known for its premium TV dramas like “Better Call Saul” and “The Walking Dead,” it has been hard at work in broadband in the past months. Its streaming portfolio includes AMC+ and venues targeting specific audience segments including Acorn TV, ALLBLK, HIDIVE, Shudder and Sundance Now. The company says it has 10.8 million paying subscribers and believes it is on track to reach 20 million to 25 million subscribers in 2025.

AMC Networks is also in the midst of releasing a new batch of programs as it searches for a successor to some of its best known series. “Better Call Saul” is in the midst of its last few episodes and “The Walking Dead,” while growing into a host of related shows, is getting old, and many of the original cast have left the shows. AMC is launching a TV series based on “Interview with the Vampire” by writer Anne Rice, and has hopes for series like “Moonhaven” and “Dark Winds.”
