You can now use Switch Joy-Con controllers with Steam

Playing games on Steam gives you the flexibility to play games with all types of consoles, and overall Valve has done a good job making sure that you can use almost any console. With the latest Steam Beta, that includes the Joy-Con controllers that shipped with the Nintendo Switch.

That’s right, you can use a Joy-Con with Steam, and you get to choose how you use it too – whether you want to use a single Joy-Con as its own controller or join a pair of them to form a single controller, just as you would on a Switch. You can then assign the different buttons to any actions you need, just as you would with any other console.

The Joy-Con has become somewhat infamous for drift issues affecting analog sticks – although it’s been shown to happen with a lot of other modern consoles as well – and they’re generally not the most comfortable. However, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 111 million as of June 30, 2022, and while nearly 19 million of them are Switch Lite models, this still leaves over 90 million units shipping with Joy-Con controllers in the box. A lot of people are bound to have these consoles and if you want to play PC games with a console then this is a lot easier for these people.

Strange that this comes after, after Steam added support for Nintendo Switch Online consoles with an update at the end of July. These are special consoles sold only to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, with consoles modeled after the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive) consoles available for purchase. These are less capable and less widely available, yet were supported first. Regardless, this means that the majority of official Nintendo Switch consoles are now supported, which can only be good news.

If you want to use your Joy-Con with Steam games, you will need to sign up for beta updates in the Steam client settings or wait for the update to reach everyone. If you’re more interested in classic-style consoles, these are already supported in the stable version of the client, although this beta client update offers some (unspecified) improvements on that front. We should note that if you use a program like JoyToKey to use Joy-Con on your Windows 11 PC, Steam will bypass that program.
