If you’ve been looking forward to playing Far Cry 6 from Ubisoft, this week might be the perfect time to do so. Far Cry 6 is free to play all weekend until August 7 on Playstation, XBox, Stadia, and on PC. This rare opportunity can be accessed at Epic Games Store (Opens in a new tab) On PC and you can taste things before deciding whether to buy the game or not.
In fact, Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 is also on sale this weekend – and it’s 60% off all of its different releases. The Standard Edition is down to $24 from $60, and the Higher Final Edition is down to $48 from its usual $120 price tag. We’ve seen different deals on Far Cry 6 before but this is the lowest price we’ve seen for the game ever.
Fortunately, it won’t cost you anything to get it running this weekend. Like the other entries in the Far Cry series, Far Cry 6 is a first-person shooter that feels very familiar to play. You are dropped on the fictional island of Yara where you are tasked with overthrowing a dictator, reclaiming enemy strongholds, extracting anti-aircraft guns, hunting wildlife for better equipment and generally causing a lot of destruction and mayhem. You can drive around the tropical island for different missions. It is an action-packed adventure that feels comfortable to play and is largely uncomplicated.
As we note in our review, Far Cry 6’s instant gameplay is quite enjoyable. This is a game that combines some of the best elements of the series and makes them work in perfect harmony. The missions and objectives are new and extras like weapon mods that replace your skill tree have been added in the game, but the core of the game remains largely the same. While playing, you have the option to search for hidden treasures that will reap benefits for you as you tackle the main task of the mission.
The dictator in the game is called Anton Castillo and is played by the fearsome Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad fame. Unfortunately, the dictator doesn’t make many entries, despite his appearance in pivotal scenes and reminiscent of the oppressive chokehold he exerts on the Yara.
Like all Far Cry games, Ubisoft has put together a secret alternative that ends with this game as well and you can read our guide on How to unlock Far Cry 6’s fun alternate ending.
My colleague Rory Mellon says Far Cry 6 is like “video game comfort food,” and in his article on why he loves the game he mentioned that “sometimes you just want to turn off your mind and cause chaos on a picturesque tropical island”. Plus who doesn’t like a game where you can unleash legendary animals on your enemies.
There are some color inconsistencies in the story, but if you like a classic action-packed sandbox game, you’ll enjoy Far Cry 6 – and while it’s free, it’s definitely worth a try.
