Marvel is making another change to the origin of The Punisher

In the pages of the latest Jason Aaron the punisher Series, Marvel Comics has made some big twists and possibly some major changes to Frank Castle’s life canon. At the core of the comic, Frank put on his trademark Skull logo and used firearms frequently on his way to becoming The Fist of the Beast and the main enforcer of the ninja death cult The Hand. Throughout the series, however, there are flashbacks to Frank’s early life, and perhaps it is impressive that he was apparently manipulated from an early age into not only a cold-blooded killer but also to join The Hand itself. This is just the first change in its origin.

There has been speculation that much of what we’ve seen in this latest flashback of The Punisher is misdirections, plants by The Hand to make Frank believe what they want him to believe, but the series was also making sure to reference certain parts of The Punisher’s backstory and make some the changes. An earlier issue revealed the first actual murder of Frank Castle, a man he murdered when he was just 10 years old, but now Punisher #5 has given us what appears to be his first major killing spree as well as a major change in his family life.

First, we should note that the problem is quick to mention Frank’s status as the scariest kid in school. He’s seen using his physical abilities and desire to punish as a reason to hurt a group of bullies who choose his classmate, Stedman Sternberger. Even though he’s a book worm, and seems to be far from a friend of Frank’s, the pair form a bond, with Steadman later convincing Frank to join the hockey team so he can weed out all his angry issues on the other players. Along the way, Steadman is also instrumental in Frank’s stay with Maria Falconio, his future wife. This is where the big changes come in.

The matter is quick to show us that when Frank doesn’t hit other ice hockey players, he hugs Maria every chance he gets. The moment he’s preoccupied with his little love, Frank forgets all about his friend Stedman, which leads to him dying alone in a nasty car wreck, an accident that doesn’t seem to have been an accident or that he was the only one in a camel. Later, it is clear that Frank not only killed all the children who killed his friend, but right after that when he went to enlist in the Marines. When Frank calls Maria to tell her he is joining the army, she reveals to him a secret of her own, that she is pregnant.

Previous Punisher stories said that prior to Frank’s time in the Marines, he had studied how to be a priest, and abandoned him when he could not overcome the need for corporal punishment. There is also some mystery when he and Maria previously met and had their children, but the latest Punisher series shows that Frank apparently joined the Marines immediately after graduating from high school and that he was a teenage father of their first child.

Seven issues remain in the series, and it looks like there will be more updates to Frank’s story with each passing month. You can find the cover and order for the next edition of Punisher below.
