Plaid Hat games reveal that a spiritual successor to Forgotten Waters is in development

Plaid Hat Games have produced beloved games like Mice & Mystics, Summoner Wars and most recently Forgotten Waters, and now they have announced one of their next projects. The studio was revealed at Gen Con (via break the dice) that Forgotten Waters’ spiritual successor is in development, and will bring back designers J. Arthur Ellis and Mr. Bistro. Original co-designer Isaac Vega will not return for the project, although Donald Shults will step in as co-designer this time around. Few details are known about the spiritual successor, although Plaid Hat Games have confirmed that it’s not a direct sequel and that it won’t be a pirate-themed game like Forgotten Waters.

For those unfamiliar with Forgotten Waters, the game featured players taking on the roles of a crew on a pirate ship as you make your way across the seas and experience a story of twists and turns along the way.

The roles include Gunner, Ship’s Scribe, First Mate, Boatswain, Lookout, and Quartermaster, but no matter what role you take, you’ll also contribute to the overall adventure with the choices you make while also working on your individual goals. The game’s story is also conveyed through the companion app, which features a full voice acting to immerse you in the story further, and as you can find in our full review, the game manages to deliver a truly unique and immersive hacking adventure for all backgammon fans.

We hope to have more information about the new game soon, but it is interesting that it is not a direct sequel. However, there are a bunch of genres and concepts that would fit right in with the mix of storytelling and gameplay that Plaid Hat Games offered at Forgotten Waters, so it’s not like they’re lacking in options. You can find the official description of Forgotten Waters below.

Forgotten Waters is a Crossroads game set in a world filled with fantasy pirate adventures. Players take on the role of pirates who sail together on a ship, trying to enhance their personal stories as well as a common goal. The world of Forgotten Waters is absurd and magical, with stories designed to encourage players to explore and laugh happily as they interact with the world around them. It’s a game where every choice can leave a lasting impact on the story, and players will want to turn every rock, just to see what they find.”
