The Houston Astros lost Carlos Correa during his pre-season free agency. He’s probably getting into free agency again, and the odds don’t seem as strong that he’ll end up again in Houston.
The Houston Astros parted ways with Carlos Correa in pre-season during his free agency. It’s possible he’s opting out of his three-year contract with the Minnesota Twins after this season, but the Astros probably won’t have Correa on their squad again.
The Astros currently have rookie Jeremy Peña as their short starting point, which is significantly cheaper than Correa and produces roughly equal results. Benya currently make $700,000 a year, Korea earns $35.1 million, which may increase during free agency.
Houston should reserve the opportunity to save a significant amount of money to achieve roughly the same results.
Rising star Jeremy Peña could be a good replacement for Carlos Correa
The Astros is roughly the league average in this season’s lineup. They have a 17th best hitting average (.242) and a 12th best on base (.317). However, the percentage of sluggishness and OPS is much higher than the league average. They have the fifth best deceleration rate (.423) and seventh best OPS (.740).
They undoubtedly have the strength in the squad, but they still have room for improvement. However, leaving Korea does not appear to have a significant negative impact on the team. This season, he hit .263/.339/.425 at an OPS of .764.
The Peña hit just under .249/.290/.422 in an OPS of .712. If he cleans up his OBP, he might be as good as Correa. This is Peña’s first season in the majors, so likely his best years ahead.
