Cardinals DH Albert Pujols have been in an amazing race since the beginning of July, outperforming all but Aaron Judge at the OPS.
Suddenly Albert Pujols is within a realistic range of hitting the 700 home point mark to completing his legendary run.
He helped secure a home double over the weekend against the Brewers on Sunday. This one got people talking.
But don’t make it crooked. Pujols do more than just chase that career sign or come up with numbers appropriate for a 42-year-old. He’s actually been one of the best hitters in baseball for over a month.
Albert Pujols’ homer double overshadows a crazy comeback throughout the game
Aaron Judge with OPS 1.376 since July 6th is the only major player to outperform Pujols with OPS 1.144. The Pujols beat the likes of Austin Riley, Juan Soto, Chris Bryant, Nolan Arenado and Freddie Freeman in that category.
It is an amazing result for a player who continues to insist that he retire at the end of this season (And he repeated it to Benjamin Hockman on Monday), although it is becoming more and more clear that he can continue if he wants to after this year. If he manages to accumulate such a run at 42, it is not far-fetched to imagine that he produces at 43 as well.
When the Cardinals brought back the Pujols for the final year, they might not have imagined that they would get this version of the legendary player. He may not be playing at his silly peak but he contributes in big ways.
He is now only 11 times at home shy of 700 and continues to improve his career numbers against the odds.
Can he continue in this form? It would be worth watching St. Louis closely along the expanse.
