Rick and Morty Co-Creator addresses the problem of the show with inside jokes

Rick and Morty Gearing up to hit Adult Swim in a few more weeks with the highly anticipated sixth season, the co-creator behind it all has addressed the animated series’ problem by telling inside jokes. As fans have seen during the first five seasons of its run so far, Rick and Morty He has a very ironic edge and tone when it comes to parodying pop culture concepts. This has resulted in some of the best gags in the series, but at the same time, the series has also built its own unforgettable library of jokes that are likely to turn on gags in their own right.

Speaking during a press event about the upcoming sixth season of the series, Rick and Morty Co-creator Justin Roiland was asked how the series handled its inside jokes when approaching the comedy for a new season. Given the many jokes the series can make for laughs, Roiland explained that with the exception of a few small references to some of its biggest moments, the team largely wants to avoid them so that the comedy remains as well polished as possible.

“I feel the smartest angle is to always try to stay true to what you think is funny,” Roiland began. “…[W]You never want to be like, “Bazinga.” We never want to do that kind of sh-t. Jokes always need to feel like well-made jokes and not mere cues…it will turn people off. “But some things may be too noticeable to be ignored and almost necessary to point out,” Roiland said, “there are [is] The occasional reference now because we have… we’ll have an acknowledgment that Rick turned himself into a pickle… just little things here and there that we’ve done.”

But in the end, Roiland made it clear Rick and MortyThe cast focuses more on comedy that writes itself more than the joke type, “but in general, we veer away from that stuff,” Roiland continued. “I think it’s just writing the show the way we’ve always been, making the comedy the way it’s always been and just the jokes and the dialogue and the funny, well-designed stuff… It’s definitely not like that, I mean, there’s a lot of I thought that touches on that stuff, that’s for sure. , all the way until the show airs, it’s as if.”
