Sheldon Mittleman Dead: MCA/Universal House Counsellor Was 89

Sheldon Mittleman, who worked as a home consultant for MCA Inc., has passed away. and Universal Studios for over 20 years, for natural causes on a Sunday night in Los Angeles. He was 89 years old.

The news was announced by a family spokesperson.

Mittleman has been appointed as a home consultant at MCA Inc. and Universal Studios in the early 1970s, working alongside talent agent Lew Wasserman, MCA/Universal President and COO Sid Sheinberg. The Wasserman-Sheinberg duo helped steer the company through the mid-1990s. When MCA/Universal acquired Seagram in 1995, Mittleman moved to Universal Television’s Business and Legal Group. Work at MCA Inc. and Universal Studios until his retirement in the late 1990s, but eventually took over as head of business and legal affairs at Steven Bocho Productions.

Mittelman was born on August 31, 1932 in Chicago. He graduated from UCLA in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and later earned a law degree from the university in 1958. Between 1954 and 1956, he served as a lieutenant in the US Air Force with JAG Corps.

by MCA Inc. and Universal Studios, Mittelman worked at Screen Gems during the beginning of his legal career. A well-respected attorney, he has represented MCA/Universal in the Motion Picture Association (MPA) negotiations with several unions. While in retirement, he was still required to be an expert advisor or witness due to his extensive knowledge of the history of guild conventions.

Mittleman is survived by son David (and wife Lisa), daughter Susan (and husband John Murdock), and grandchildren Andrew and Lauren.
