With Deshaun Watson’s impending suspension, should Brown be interested in striking a deal with the 49ers for Jimmy Garoppolo?
The Cleveland Browns have only themselves to blame for the situation they found themselves in.
Cleveland gave up three first-round picks for Deshaun Watson, then immediately paid $230 million in fully guaranteed money. This is despite the inevitable suspension coming his way, which on Thursday became 11 games.
Now the question becomes whether Brown should call the San Francisco 49ers in an effort to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo.
Garoppolo has one year left on his contract and is reserve replacement for second-year quarterback Trey Lance, who took on the primary task during the off-season. While Garoppolo is nowhere near as talented as Watson, it would be a clear upgrade over Cleveland’s current backup, Jacoby Brissett.
Is trading for and signing Jimmy Garoppolo really a better option than what Cleveland has inside the company?
As for Watson, she knew that once the NFL resumed, he would have been sitting out more than he initially recommended. After he was originally given a six-game suspension by discipline officer Sue Robinson for twenty allegations of sexual assault and/or misconduct leading to civil lawsuits, Watson was given a much longer sentence through an NFL appeal.
That leaves Cleveland without the quarterback until Week 13 – when Browns visit the Houston Texans – and forces them to rely on Jacoby Brissett after the team replaced Baker Mayfield with the Carolina Panthers this summer. This is clearly suboptimal for Brown’s offense, which might inspire the front office to strike a deal for a better option.
