A question: First, I have to ask Cale about Johan. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is a special leading role for the character. How did it feel this time at work knowing that Gohan would finally get his due here?

Kyle Herbert: I had a deep desire to finally see Gohan have his day since it’s been decades since the Majin Blu saga. The world witnessed what happened to Gohan during his training and that everything was going to go somewhere, but then it took a left turn as Gohan became completely different. He’s definitely still growing as a character, a father, and as a husband. He’s obviously very smart and all that, so he’s a very 3D character, but to take it back to how it was in the Hive saga and all? It’s exciting to see.

A question: For Zeno and Aleks, you are no stranger to being in a high-profile anime series. But when it comes to Dragon Ball, it’s a little new. How did it feel to you entering the franchise and being able to interact with fans on this new level?

Zeno Robinson: As someone who’s been a fan for a long time, it feels completely different when you read a manga and think, “Oh, that would be nice to be in,” as opposed to when you grow up with something and they ask you to be in it. It is completely different. I guess it’s a little close to home, you know? It’s a little more personal. I also can’t believe I would be a part of such an amazing privilege that was so useful to me in my youth. Dragon Ball is a big part of the animation and a big part of the identities of a lot of people growing up, so it was definitely an honor for me to be a part of this franchise.

Alex Low: He’s crazy, you know? Just be on that road and suddenly one day this opportunity comes up? To go full circle? Yes, it is definitely amazing.

A question: Acting in Dragon Ball is obviously hard work, and it can tear your voice apart. Zeno and Alex, how was it for the two of you to be in the cabin and leave her?

Zeno: I liked screaming strangely. Maybe I’ll get out of that, but in Dragon Ball, yelling is very basic. Screaming is kind of a feature of the show. I came and was hoping for a really big cry. I know Kris [Sabat], our manager, is really worried about these things. Anytime I had to make a big scream, I’d like to hear him slamming into the other side of the glass. And then he asked me if I was okay. I was always like, “Can I do that again?” He was very protective and all, but like, this is Dragon Ball. It’s something I did as a kid when I was turning on the salad…we were excited. I mean, this is the time to do that. Like screaming, when you think of anime, you think of Dragon Ball.

A question: Kyle, you’ve been a part of the franchise for a long time, so you know Dragon Ball inside and out. This new movie is clearly a bit different due to its CG visuals. How did you react when you saw what the movie would look like? How do you feel about the artwork now?

Kyle: I think it’s part of the natural evolution of animation, you know? There are new tools in the hands of animators to make things look more visually interesting while preserving original designs. This art literally gives the characters more depth with cell shading and everything. It is clear that computers can develop art at a rapid pace. Of course, I’m a fan of the old-school hand-drawn animation. But in this movie, the art is stunningly beautiful. I kept saying between each line.

A question: We also mentioned earlier that Gohan takes the lead in this movie, and he does so with Piccolo by his side. I want to know, Kyle, how do you think the relationship between Gohan and Piccolo has changed for better or for worse since it was introduced back in Dragon Ball Z?

Kyle: You know, it’s a very strong bond. It’s amazing to see how Piccolo came to protect not only Gohan, but his found family. He wants to take care of them, but he also wants to train them and make sure they can defend themselves against any danger to the Earth. But at its core, it is like a family bond linked to strength and loyalty. I think over time it gets stronger. This is a great message to send to fans, you know? Family does not have to be blood. He could just be someone who takes your side and is basically a cheerleader. Gohan has it. Whenever he has any doubts, he knows Piccolo will be there. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

A question: Gohan is clearly a father himself now with Pan, and they are very cute. What kind of advice do you think Piccolo gave Gohan on how to raise a child because he should have had some advice?

Kyle: Oh, you probably don’t like Ki to blow anyone up. There will be advice on being polite with your surroundings. About not blowing things up. I don’t know that Gohan needed much help or anything because I think he has a natural sense of love and loyalty for his daughter. He knows that anytime he can’t do that, Piccolo can take the slack.

A questionDragon Ball Super: Super Hero also focuses on a new relationship, between Gamma One and Gamma Two. The couple are brothers, so I would like to ask how it was for the development of this bond for fans? What is the secret behind gamma magic?

Alex: I think their magic lies in their interactions, sure. their brotherly bond. It’s about how they are partners in crime, but they also treat each other like a kind of family. There is a level of professionalism that is only surface level. You can definitely see that they are definitely the younger and older brother types. They also have these two different personality types that make their bond more entertaining, subtle, and complex. Gamma One is more sedate while Gamma Two is more energetic. It’s a balancing act, I think, between the two.

Zeno: They keep each other on the ground but lift each other up at the same time. I think that just makes for a really great relationship between the two. It is very entertaining.
