Houston ISD student helps save his coach during heart attack!

Houston, Texas — Robert Myers, Chavez High School teacher and coach, is grateful to start the new school year after he ended up in the hospital at the end of last year.

Coach Myers went into complete cardiac arrest while in his class in May. One of his students, Ja’Marcus Pipkins, was stopping by Myers’ class at the time and getting down to business. Pipkins helped alert employees and helped get Myers to EMS.

“If Ja’Marcus hadn’t come on the walkie-talkie, and had it not been for the phone calls, it would have been over for me. I would have died on this floor,” Myers said.

The team at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital in Houston said that getting Myers to the hospital quickly was essential to his survival.

“I was like, I can’t lose it,” Pepkins said. “This guy is very important to me. He’s my coach. I love him. He taught me everything I know.”

Myers coaches basketball and is the director of Chavez’s chess program. Pepkins plays basketball and is the head of the chess team. The couple enjoys a close relationship dating back years. In fact, Myers has known Pepkins since the fourth grade when Myers trained his older brothers. Both are looking forward to what this school year will achieve as their relationship continues to grow.
