It will interest you to note that the North, and particularly the Northwest, has been the voting bank of these two political parties in determining who will emerge victorious in the general election over the years. Based on the information obtained from the IEC, it will be interesting to note that at the end of the ongoing voter registration exercise that ended on July 31, a total of 12.29 million new eligible voters were added to the electoral register. In 2019, the electoral register of the Independent National Electoral Commission was 84 million.

With the latest statistics from the Independent Electoral Commission, records show that 71.4 percent of those who completed voter registration were between the ages of 18 and 34, a total of 788 million. In the Northwest, 3 states considered the voting bank for either the APC or the PDP have stepped up in addition to the INEC electoral register. They include:

1- Kano State – 6,026,850 registered voters

Kano State remains the most important northwestern state for both the APC and the PDP. The state has the largest number of registered voters. In 2019, Kano State had about 5.45 million voters. After the end of continuous voter registration, 569,103 new voters were added to the electoral register for a total of 6.02 million voters. In Nigeria, apart from Lagos State, Kano State remains the second state with the largest number of registered voters.

2- Kaduna State – 4,411,723 registered voters

Kaduna State is the second state in the Northwest with such a large number of registered voters that both the GPC and the HDP may wish to contest. In 2019, Kaduna State had 3.93 million registered voters. After the suspension of the 2022 CVR by INEC, 479,231 newly registered voters were added to the registry making the total number of voters 4.4 million.

3. Katsina State – 3570740 registered voters

Finally, in 2019, Katsina State had 3.2 million registered voters based on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s registry. After the provisional electoral register was suspended, 340,510 voters were added to the electoral register for a total of 3.57 million eligible voters.

This means that the states of Kano, Kaduna and Katsina alone in the 2023 general election had 14,009,313 registered voters. Therefore, if either the GPC or the HDP can lure the voters to their advantage, they are halfway to winning the election. Do you think the APC or the PDP can take over the Northwest in the 2023 presidential election?
