PlayStation Plus reveals a new free weekend on PS5 and PS4

Sony has announced that it will be holding a new free trial period for PlayStation Plus until next week. While PS Plus may notably have become synonymous with Sony’s library of free PS5 and PS4 games to subscribers, the platform is still required to play multiplayer games on PlayStation consoles. Fortunately, if you’re still not a PS Plus member, you’ll be able to get the service for yourself in just a few days.

Detailed on social media today, PlayStation has informed PS5 and PS4 users that PS Plus will be free from August 27 through August 28. This means that any games on any PlayStation console that feature multiplayer and require PS Plus in order to play will no longer block those without a subscription. This is a show that Sony tends to do a few different times each year, so it’s no surprise to see the promotion coming again.

It’s important to stress that while PS Plus will be free on PS5 and PS4 next weekend, not all of the perks associated with the platform will be unlocked. Specifically, this means that you will not be able to download free August games available on PS Plus, nor will you be able to access titles that are part of PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium. This offer is strictly related to PlayStation Plus and its ability to allow you to play multiplayer games.

Then again, even if Sony allows all PlayStation users to download free games associated with PS Plus, it’s not as if they can access them for long. Games obtained through PlayStation Plus are only playable by those with an active membership. Therefore, unless you keep your PS Plus subscription active at all times, even “free” titles that can be played through the service cannot be accessed forever.
