Sammy Watkins says Patrick Mahomes is not Aaron Rodgers

Sammy Watkins is now a member of the Packers after several years with the Chiefs and has not hesitated to compare Aaron Rodgers to Patrick Mahomes.

While Sammy Watkins’ NFL career didn’t necessarily start with the best quarterbacks a wide receiver could ask for, the past four seasons have been solid. He spent 2018-20 with the Kansas City Chiefs, which means he got to experience Patrick Mahomes’ rise. He then spent last season with Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.

Now, he can continue that trend as he will fit in with the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers. And if you ask the former first-round player which signal callers he’s played with, he’s on the cusp of picking up balls from the best yet.

Rodgers was asked recently and had an honest assessment in comparing back-to-back NFL MVP to the Mahomes, i.e. the Packers Future Hall of Famer is on a level above the franchise quarterback from the Chiefs.

Sammy Watkins: Aaron Rodgers is on a ‘completely different level’ than Patrick Mahomes

That’s a bold claim to some people considering the talent that Mahomes has. But then again, Rodgers has long been the rhino in the NFL with his under-center ability.

Having said that, Watkins’ travels around the league would make him somewhat more qualified to make this assessment than most. So maybe there are some merits to his comments and Rodgers really has an edge over Mahomes, and as such, maybe every other midfielder in the league.

For this to be a conversation, though, it talks about how much I admire Rodgers in his late thirties. The fact that he has a wide receiver – although a current teammate would be wise to get him excited – compared to Mahomes, a player entering his prime who has already won the MVP title in his own right, is also something to consider.

Whether you join Watkins in awarding Rodgers the QB title over Mahomes or lean in the other direction, there’s no denying that they are both at the top of the league as quarterbacks today.

Now if Watkins could only stay healthy in Green Bay to take advantage of that…
