Back to school: ABC13’s Jacob Rascon celebrates the new school year with The Woodlands High School students!

The Woodlands, Texas (KTRK) – The school is officially back in session, with all areas of the Houston area now back in class.

ABC13 broadcaster Jacob Rascon visited his high school, The Woodlands High School. During his visit, he got a special look at a team leading the school to big things.

Jacob said this was his first visit since he graduated in 2004 — the same year many of the students he met at school on Wednesdays were born.

Visit the Hall of Champions, where framed T-shirts of TWHS alumni who have gone on to play professional sports are displayed alongside plaques featuring dozens of state titles for everything from golf to baseball and cross-country. In fact, the TWHS cross-country team alone has won the state championship 16 times.

With over 4,300 students, TWHS is one of the largest schools in the state…and it’s only 10th to 12th grade!

The Texas Education Agency recently ranked public schools for the first time since the pandemic began, and TWHS received a 95.

Dozens of students got up early to join ABC13 on the morning newscast.

The 72-member Highstepper team is well known across the city. Their dresses have looked the same since 1976 when the team was created. Since then, the show has only had three directors, including current director Heather Hayes.

And Jacob’s school fans and mascots are also joined by! Al Bahja team finished second in the state competition last year.

They are looking forward to Thursday’s season opener when TWHS takes Northshore High School.

Danny Amendola, who recently retired after 14 seasons from the NFL, helped lead the soccer team to its first-ever state championship game at Jacob, which Northshore eventually won.

Fellow ABC13 announcer Eric Barajas is a member of Team Northshore, and he has agreed to buy Jacob BBQ when Northshore loses this time…even though Team Northshore is the defending state title.

The drummer and a handful of other band members also joined Jacob. The TWHS band of more than 300 members has made the country’s top ten 15 times, including last year when it ranked fourth in the country and number one in Texas.

Jacob was also impressed with the Robotics team, Pastabots!

Led by coach Lauren Hamill, who herself graduated from TWHS, the robotics team transformed from a small after-school club just several years ago into a championship program.

The school now offers three robotics classes and carefully selects six robotic teams. Seniors from last year are now studying chemical, biomedical and other engineering at colleges like Johns Hopkins, A& M and UT Austin and Georgia Tech.
