Man works with city departments to install red light at a Magnolia intersection where his mom was fatally injured!

Magnolia, Texas (KTRK) – A woman named Beverly Cook has died of injuries sustained after a car accident at the intersection of Spear 149 and FM 149 in Magnolia. And her son is acting to ensure that a traffic light is installed to keep the area safe.

“She was the manager of a home healthcare company,” said Marcus Cook, Beverly’s son. “She’s been recovering from open-heart surgery since February, and she’s been released to do all the things she could do in life again.”

Cook noticed how preoccupied this intersection was with the expansion of the Woodlands, and wanted to make sure that his mother’s death led to lasting change.

Cook contacted Montgomery County 2 commissioner, Charlie Riley to make this happen.

Through the commissioner, Cook discovered 19 incidents reported at that location from January 2020 through July 2022.

His mother’s accident was the only fatal accident, and he wanted it to stay that way.

“When I came to stare at the flags where my mom’s accident happened and just assembled, I knew we needed a light here,” Cook said.

He worked with Riley, BNSF Railway, and the Texas Department of Transportation to get a light at the intersection.

Since each department has to work together, creating a lamp usually takes a long time, but Cook made it happen quickly.

By the end of 2022, the light is expected to be complete. Cook says it is a testament to the woman who raised him.

“I know she’s looking down and going, ‘Of course there’s going to be a lighter faster than usual because my son is working on it, and I know he’s not going to stop until he’s finished,'” Cook said.
