Sandman directors talk about keeping the extra episode real for the comics

Last week, Netflix surprised fans hypnotic With the release of an unexpected new episode, a two-part show included an animated adaptation of “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” from The Sandman #18 and a direct adaptation of “Calliope” from The Sandman #17. Fans were delighted with the episode, which saw each part remain Fairly honest with their comedy inspiration, albeit in their slightly different way. ComicBook.com spoke with Hesco Holsing, who directed “A Dream of a Thousand Cats,” and Louise Hopper, who directed “Calliope,” and they both explained how the episode’s parts honored the source material.

For Hulsing, it was the story that honored the storyboards rather than the visual style.

“What happened was that I read the comics too, and I loved it. But I realized we were, I mean, very true to the story, but I only read the comics once. And then what happened was Alan Heinberg, one of the showrunners, wrote a compressed version of the story as text.” And I use scripts, and that’s what I usually do with Undone, for example, the series I also run, for production design. I use script and start to miniature it.”

He continued, “There’s also a comic book, there’s a lot of creative freedom with camera angles that would be very confusing with animation. There are different rules for film than comic books, but we’ve stayed true to comics because they’re so similar to a story.”

For Hopper, getting close to the comics was also important, to the point that even specific scenes were lifted straight off the page.

“I always think of Alan’s point of view and working with Neil [Gaiman] The whole thing was always “that goes into the comics, it always has to be faithful”. And then any deviation was for the right reasons. For example, we don’t show much nudity, like you commented on. We don’t show rape. There are things that we feel in 2022, do we need to see that or do we want to, you know, reframe that a little bit. So, Neil is incredible. This is his vision. So, wherever we can, we’ll honor the frame. So, for example, there’s a shot where you open the door to find the empty room and Calliope has gone in the books there. This is the same shot straight from the comic, you know, so it’s like how do you shoot that light shot? “

Both stories are in the special episode starring Tom Sturridge as Dream with the rest of the guests cast as “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” including Sandra Oh as “The Prophet”, Rosie Day as “The Tabby Kitten” and David Gyasi As “The Tabby Kitten”. The Gray Cat, Joe Lycett as ‘The Black Cat’, Neil Gaiman as ‘Crow/Skull Bird’, James McAvoy (who voiced Dream in Audible’s The Sandman) as ‘Golden-Haired Man’ and David Tennant as Don and Georgia Tennant as Laura Lynn, Michael Sheen as Paul, Anna Lundberg as Marion, Nunso Anozzi as Wyvern, Diane Morgan as Griffon, Tom Wu as Hippogriff . The story is directed by Hesco Holsing.

The movie “Calliope”, which tells an inspiring story with a history with a dream, directed by Louise Hooper and its guest starring Melissanthi Mahut as “Callop”, Arthur Darville as “Richard Maddock”, Nina Wadia as “Mother’s Destiny”, “Souad Fares as” Fate Crone”, Dinita Gohil as “Fate Maiden”, Kevin Harvey as “Larry”, Amita Suman as “Nora”, and Derek Jacobi as “Erasmus Fry”.

hypnotic It was critically acclaimed, receiving a 4 out of 5 review from ComicBook.com: “While the purists may bemoan some of the changes, they ultimately provide a more cohesive viewing experience that still allows individual short stories within the grand saga the room viewers need to fully appreciate. . hypnotic The cast has taken the Dream comics and made a good adaptation of a story that is, after all, how we take the things of dreams and apply them to our lives, our art, and our relationships. And after watching this thriller at the end of Season 1, viewers will almost certainly be dreaming about what’s coming next.”
