Director Aditya Chopra has revealed a big vision for ‘Come Fall in Love’, the theatrical adaptation of the 1995 blockbuster Bollywood film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, usually shortened to DDLJ.
Producer Yash Raj Films also shared an exclusive photo from the production rehearsal with him diverse.
Chopra said, “I first envisioned the story of DDLJ (even before it was called DDLJ) as a Hollywood love story of a white American man and an Indian woman. My main motive at the time was to introduce Indian culture and values to a global audience. Years later, when I reimagined the story as a play Musical on Broadway, my mainstay remains the same, introducing Indian culture to a global audience.The most powerful way to portray a country’s culture and values is to see it from the perspective of someone who does not belong to the same culture.This is the starting point for “Come Real”, the story of Hindi Simran its culture and heritage, through the eyes of the American Roger”.
Come Fall in Love is the story of Simran, an Indian-American, as she struggles to balance her love for Indian traditions and her family with her love for Roger, a white American man who falls madly in love with her, and then falls in love with her culture and country. Roger finds a new version of himself in the energy, values and lifestyle of India,” Chopra said.
“I’m not making DDLJ for Broadway. I am adapting it as ‘Come Fall In Love’ to tell the story of how powerful love is in uniting cultures, especially today. In 2022, the idea of ’DDLJ’ can be adapted to provide a vision of the diverse cultures that meet,” Chopra said. Together in a story that celebrates the love and power you have to unite everyone.”
Chopra has directed a 30-person cast, including Shuba Narayan (Disney’s “Aladdin” as Princess Jasmine on Broadway) as Simran and Austin Colby (Disney’s North American tour “Frozen the Musical” as Hans) as Roger.
Chopra said, “For me, Austin Colby as Roger and Chupa Narayan as Simran are the perfect vehicle for bringing the message of cultural unification home in a fragmented world. They are joined by the cast, crew, and creative team that represents all the extraordinary talents that Indian cinema and Broadway have to offer. The representation and art of India resonate in every part of this production.’Come Fall in Love’ is not only my heartfelt vision of ‘Love in Every Color’, as stated in the musical’s finale, but a celebration of joy, synergy and inclusivity in a divisive and growing world of intolerance. It is also my message of my love to India and the Indian heritage that we carry with us wherever we are.”
“In making a new DDLJ movie for a new moment and a new audience, I’ve walked away from some aspects of the movie that our fans revere. But I think the heart of ‘Come Fall In Love’ beats with everything that is essential in ‘DDLJ’ even as he talks, sings and dances up to this point, in a place where and different times, with hope, optimism and love,” Chopra added.
Leading Indian songwriters Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani act as composers. “Come Fall In Love – The DDLJ Musical” will play at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego on September 1 from October 1-16 and go to Broadway after that.
