The future of Pokemon Unite shines in the World Championships

one of the voices pokemon unite He sees a bright future for a MOBA-style game. earlier this month, pokemon unite Team BLVCKHVND was crowned as its first-ever World Champion after an intense three-day tournament involving thirteen teams from around the world. The pokemon unite The matches have been one of the standouts of the Pokemon World Championships, thanks to its fast-paced gameplay and streaming presentation.

The Pokemon Company has brought in some top-notch talents to summon pokemon unite Tournament, including the self-proclaimed Content Cowboy Spragels, who was selected pokemon unite Games and follow the competitive scene since the beginning of the game. We had a chance to speak with Spragels after wrapping up pokemon unite Tournament to discuss the rise pokemon unite, Where the game fits into the broader Pokémon franchise, and how the game could grow as it enters its second year.

ComicBook.com: It really surprised me how pokemon unite It was introduced in the Pokemon World Championships, and that was in large part due to you and the other casters. The presentation of the game is very high energy and really attracts the viewers and keeps them fascinated throughout the match. How do you maintain this energy throughout the game? How much is that performance and how much is the attraction to the excitement of matches?

Sprages: I think it’s part of both. So pokemon unite It is set up by the developers in a very specific way. It’s a 10-minute game, whatever happens. They had several moments throughout the match which are obvious big moments. You usually have three or four big moments inside every match. So pokemon unite It’s made to be a really easy game that gets you excited because they made exciting moments inside of it.

As much as we do in broadcasting, my job is to show people why those moments are so exciting. So, I guess I’d say it’s a bit of both – pokemon unite Exciting, the game creates exciting moments, and I want to bring that energy into it as well and I want to show people what’s really cool about the game. It’s also easy when you have the best teams from all over the world competing. And there were big question marks about which teams would do well, and which regions would do well.

What were the biggest surprises in the first year of Pokemon Unite, especially in terms of the competitive landscape?

Sprages: I think it’s so amazing pokemon unite He held a world championship in his first year. This is unbelievable. They knew they had an exciting game here and wanted to take advantage of that. I think that’s big because everyone in the competitive scene of pokemon uniteNo one had any idea if there would be a world championship or not. When Pokemon announced it, teams from all over the world got into it, especially in a few big regions. Everyone is so excited about it.

It’s interesting to see the game grow from just a few companies hosting small tournaments here and there to the Pokémon who’s really behind it and saying, “No, we’re doing a global tournament and we’re putting out teams from 10 regions or something.” And then we see the games start with everyone picking a Pokemon at random and now it’s “No, we know the best Pokemon and who the best teams are and also Greninja wears a hat.” The game seems to be constantly changing and growing.

They’ve also done a great job of making us feel like we’re moving through important moments in gaming history. The launch looked very special. They always give players gifts and things like that. Then they held this winter event where the entire map changed. There was a Zapdos in the middle of the map and suddenly, everything changed to a winter theme. Articuno was there. It felt like they were leading you through key moments in the game. Then recently, we just celebrated our anniversary. And even when you’re logged into the game, there are fireworks and all of this stuff is happening, and it really feels like this game is evolving and growing. Hey, you evolve like a pokemon.

Speaking of developments, what changes do you think Pokemon Unite needs to make in order for the game to take the next step?

Sprages: yes. This is a great question. Well, there are a few things. I think the more they can do to get every type of player excited about the game, the better. They are doing a great job now with the World Championship for a professional and serious player, and I think they are doing a very good job. A post for casual players. I’d like to see them do something for the kind of solo queue warrior like myself and the many guys out there, as we’re not always in groups of five. I’d like to see a way for us to climb a ladder and things like that. I think when people score play, they want to progress, they want to feel like they’re climbing and growing and getting better. So things like that would be amazing.

The thing they’ve done well is new Pokemon. They release a lot of new Pokemon, and the more they do it, I just feel like you’re motivating more and more people. I think they really need to keep that up. They had such an amazing Pokemon release schedule. So I think they just need to keep it going, because that keeps a lot of the excitement around the game. They release new Pokemon all the time and keep the game fresh and exciting. There is something new to check out all the time. What are we going to do about Tyranitar? It’s something new all the time.

metagame in pokemon unite It is constantly changing and this is a huge difference from the main Pokemon games. We know what Pokémon will appear in the heart of VGC. And while there is little of that in pokemon unite, We saw a bunch of different team groups. With the meta constantly shifting, how can players and how can you as a commentator keep up with the changes?

Sprages: Well, I’m subscribed pokemon unite All the time, so it’s not too hard to keep up. And I try to help my audience understand what’s going on with the changes. The best part about games like this is without a doubt the balance changes and when things change. Suddenly a Pokémon that people like Mr. Mime didn’t use was rebalanced and suddenly Mr. Mime became amazing. I love that. It’s also great to see teams from different regions sort of solidify their metadata and then bring it together. I don’t think anyone expected one of the best teams in the world to play for Gardívoire. It’s a really cool Pokemon game but it doesn’t see nearly any competitive game, at least in North America and the European Union. Very very little. Then all of a sudden, the Renaissance comes here and it’s totally dominant with a Pokemon that I think people would have said not in the meta.

Speaking of this year’s tournament, what BLVCKHVND did in this tournament was really impressive. They just ran to the finals and dominated it. Final crush. That was a clinic. Have you seen such a dominant performance before?

Sprages: From time to time you see a difference, especially with some definitions, where you go, “Oh, wow. They figured out this version of the game very well.” We have seen it in pokemon unite . For example, one of the teams that made it to the Grand Finals, Noun Esports, had months on broadcasts in the European Union where they were unbeatable in a way… you can’t believe how good they were. And BLVCKHVND did it here at Worlds. BLVCKHVND was amazing here. Doing it here on the world stage against every kind of team that could be thrown at them, is pretty impressive. Nobody expected, I don’t think, that they would win this leadership somehow. 3-0 in the Grand Finals. Come on.

So now we’re entering year two, do you think BLVCKHVND can maintain that kind of performance in next year’s worlds?

Sprages: If they keep playing the way they play and keep being consistent with the game, I think they will be an insanely difficult team to beat. People will need to know how to play against BLVCKHVND. However, as time passes and more and more new things are discovered, every region has a chance to come up with something you least expect. I couldn’t watch every Korean broadcast, every Japanese broadcast. I try to watch as many of them as I can because I really want to see what each area does, but I think a lot of the areas really liked it here. So I don’t think they’re too late, however, the BLVCKHVND is the fast car. I mean, everyone is chasing them at this point.

How would you like to see the World Championships growing? How would you like to see the competitive landscape grow in the second year?

Sprages: Obviously more difference. If you can get more teams involved, that would be great. If there were other areas that would like more representation, I think that would be exciting. The more teams you can bring together in a world championship it will be unbelievable.

Obviously, the more Pokemon, because it makes the strategies deeper. And there are plenty of ways they can increase the level of strategy within the tournament as well. There are other games similar to the ones that have things like pick and block stage. They have ways in which a Pokémon cannot be selected by a team in a particular round. There are a lot of things you can do to make it more complicated and I also think it increases the excitement from a spectator’s point of view. So I think a lot of that can be really cool.

They had one amazing year. I wasn’t really expecting…I guess almost everyone who was covering the game didn’t expect it to be this big the first year. She was very fast and they really hit her out of the park.
