EBay acquires Card Marketplace TCGPlayer for $295 million

eBay has announced plans to buy popular trading card market TCGPlayer for $295 million. Buying continues to push eBay into trading cards, as collectible cards are currently one of the best selling products on the auction site. TCGPlayer will continue to operate independently after the acquisition is completed, and plans to add features such as “comprehensive strategic channel capabilities such as order fulfillment and shopping cart optimization” to TCGPlayer’s already powerful suite of e-commerce tools. The sale is expected to be completed in early 2023.

“eBay continues to build on our 26 years of trading card experience, supporting local hobby stores and high street retailers to deliver an online destination that collectors will love,” Dawn Block, Vice President of Collectibles at eBay, said in a press release announcing. the purchase. “eBay has always fueled our customers’ passion in the field and facilitated communications between buyers and sellers, and by using TCGplayer we can improve customer experience across categories, build more relationships, and meet the needs of enthusiasts around the world.”

Founded in 2008, TCGPlayer specializes in selling trading cards associated with games such as Magic: The Gathering and the Pokemon trading card game. A card site is a marketplace where users can buy and sell cards from other users. The individual card pages display average prices, trends, and a list of the latest sales, giving potential buyers plenty of information so they don’t get stolen. One notable difference between the user base of eBay and TCGPlayer is that while eBay caters primarily to collectors, TCGPlayer also aggressively caters to players looking to build existing competitive decks in various trading card games.

eBay is growing its trading card games business, in part because collectible cards have become so popular during the pandemic. The company noted that more than $2 billion in trading card transactions were made on eBay in the first half of 2021, which exceeded the volume of sales made on the platform during the entire year of 2020. All cards sold for over $750 were original, along with a physical eBay Vault for buyers and sellers to send their rated cards for added security.
