Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Make a Big Change with Prepaid eShop Cards

Nintendo is making a massive change to the eShop on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U platforms beyond today. Previously, Nintendo announced that both the 3DS and Wii U eShops would be shutting down in early 2023, which would result in fans not being able to purchase games on these platforms in the future. And while that final shutdown could last a few months down the road, a massive change with both the 3DS and Wii U will begin this week.

Starting tomorrow August 30th, Nintendo will no longer allow customers to purchase games directly through 3DS and Wii U eShops using prepaid cards. While these eShop store cards are often sold at many retailers, 3DS and Wii U storefronts will no longer allow customers to add money to their accounts locally from these platforms. This change doesn’t bring a complete end to the eShop on the 3DS and Wii U, but it will make both markets more complex.

From now on, to add money to your Nintendo account, you will have to do so via Nintendo Switch. Since Nintendo accounts can be linked across 3DS, Wii U, and Switch, the money that appears in your wallet via the Switch storefront will reflect when you then return to your old eShop stores. So, if you’ve ever purchased a Nintendo eShop prepaid card after today, you’ll only have to redeem it through your Switch.

In general, both the 3DS and Wii U eShops have about seven months left before they permanently close. Nintendo has informed fans that the Storefronts will officially retire on March 27, 2023. As such, if you want to grab any other titles on either platform, be sure to start making these purchases in the coming months.
