Even though he has had years and fifteen years playing James Bond under his belt, the actor had some disbelief about his ability to bring the Oscar-nominated movie back to life without making it look tacky. Speaking in a new interview with Empire MagazineCraig opened up about this specifically, noting that his time playing Ian Flemming’s secret agent prepared him to headline a franchise title based on specific metaphors.
“How do we f-ck something that has captured people’s imagination and make them talk about murder mysteries, and do it all over again without turning into a pastiche on its own?” Craig thought about it. “I’ve spent the last 15 years of my life trying to do this in a series, so I’m not afraid of it. If you have the right people in the room and the right talent, you can do it Ryan is a genius writer who doesn’t want to be repetitive. [himself]. And we don’t want to let people down. We want the public to enjoy the world we created in the first world and believe in that world.”
Speaking about how they managed this, writer/director Rian Johnson has opened up about his intentions in keeping things fresh, especially since like the detective franchises of the past, the sequels are not about expanding on her main character. “There’s definitely more Blanc, but it’s not very interesting to me, the idea of building Benoit’s life,” Johnson told the outlets. “As with Poirot and Miss Marple, the interesting thing is how elements of Benoit’s character reveal themselves through his work solving each one of these mysteries.”
Not only will Glass Onion feature an all-new setting of Knives Out, colorful Greece rather than rural Massachusetts, but it will also feature an all-new set that includes the likes of Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Katherine Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madeleine Klein with Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.
The much-anticipated sequel will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, before it premieres in US theaters in November. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will start streaming on Netflix on December 23, 2022.
