Drake May has officially taken the torch from Sam Howell

UNC football fans rejoice, as Drake May has officially taken the torch from Sam Howell.

It was tough for UNC head football coach Mac Browne to replace Sam Hoyle in the middle, but he certainly found his man below the center in Drake May.

Maye played big in the Week 0 home win over Florida A&M. While the Rattlers were shorthanded versus the Tar Heels, Maye had a great game for UNC versus the Appalachian State, despite not having the No. 1 wide receiver at Josh Downs. North Carolina may still be a year away, but the Tar Heels clearly have something special in the middle with Maye taking over as Howell.

This is what happens when you have a quarterback who eats more than just chicken fingers.

UNC Football: Tar Heels Has Something Special for Luke Maye’s Quarterback

While the defense needs quite some work, Maye can really hold it up for the Tar Heels. Appalachian State player and former Clemson mover Chase Price has kept up. Even if the App State is a team of five, the Mountaineers are one of the best teams in the Sun Belt. Teams in that league showed they could do more than just stay with the teams in the ACC on the college football field.

While it remains to be seen how North Carolina State will stack up with the rest of the teams in the ACC Coastal Division, the Tar Heels do not appear to be skipping a center win with Maye taking over Howell. This is significant because Howell is the best quarterback associated with Brown’s second spell at Chapel Hill. Howell now plays with the leaders of Washington.

In the afternoon, Maye completed 24 of 36 passes for 352 yards, four touchdown passes and was not intercepted. He relied on his rushing attack to help make up for Downs’ lack of availability to win Barnberner’s absolute match against the Appalachian State, 63-61. The least quarterback could have lost under the circumstances, but for May, this is another kick against the wall. What a great second win!

For the foreseeable future, when it comes to who starts under the position at UNC, it will be May.
