Galveston, Texas (KTRK) – A drunk driver has been charged with murder after a 14-year-old was killed in a car accident Friday night, according to police.

The video above is from a previous report.

Keith Brazier, 28, is charged with the murder of 14-year-old Mason Nelson and is currently in custody under a $500,000 bond.

Texas prison records show that Brazier was in prison, serving a three-year sentence for driving while intoxicated and possessing cocaine. Records show that he was convicted in December 2021 and sentenced to 109 days in prison.

He was originally scheduled to serve in prison until September of 2024. Prison records show that he was granted parole on Friday, the day of the fatal accident.

Galveston County court records show that Brazier had three DWI convictions over a five-year period.

On Saturday, investigators said the 14-year-old was killed when the jeep he was traveling in was attacked by a speeding SUV driven by a Brazier, which was signaling a red light.

Mason was one of five people who were in the jeep when the Toyota SUV crashed into the car. Police said two of the jeep’s passengers are in critical condition at UTMB Health.

Gaspard said a Toyota passenger with a Brazzer was also injured in the accident and was in hospital in a critical condition.

The accident occurred at the intersection of 41st Street and Avenue O at about 6 p.m. across from Galveston Ball High School.

Galveston Police confirmed that Mason died at the scene, and all others were taken to the trauma center at John Seeley Hospital at UTMB Health in Galveston.

Galveston Police Detective Derek Gaspard said investigators believe alcohol is a contributing factor, and that charges are forthcoming.

Members of the Galveston Police Traffic Safety Unit, the Incident Reconstruction Team, the Criminal Investigation Division, and agents with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission were part of the investigation.

An eyewitness told police that a white Toyota was traveling at speed westbound on O Street and collided with a northbound jeep on 41st Street.

The intersection was closed for investigation until 10:45 pm, when the two vehicles were removed from the scene.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Galveston Police at (409) 765-3703 or Galveston County Crime Stoppers at (409) 763-8477.
