Busan Film Festival: Tony Leung wins Asian Director of the Year

Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Hong Kong star of In The Mood For Love, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has won Best Asian Director of the Year by the Busan International Film Festival. Leung will receive his award at the festival’s opening ceremony on October 5, 2022.

The festival will open with a screening of the film “The Smell of the Wind” by Haji Mohaqeq. The Iranian director previously won the 2015 New Currents competition in Busan with his second tall villa, Immortal.

The festival will conclude with A Man from Japan, Ishikawa Kei. The title premiered this week at the Venice Film Festival in the Orrizonti section.

Busan organizers said the festival will screen a total of 243 films (both feature and short) from 71 countries and territories. It includes 89 world premieres and 13 international debuts.

After two years of turmoil, the festival will be operating largely normally. This includes a red carpet opening ceremony, 30-screen shows in seven venues, star-and-fan meetings, as well as master classes and private talks.

“All events and parties, including the opening and closing ceremonies, are preparing for normal operations. The organizers said that invitations to foreign guests, accreditation for festival/market badges and ticket issuance will proceed as in the pre-pandemic years.”

More to track.
