DC just revived an amazingly dead Batman villain

When writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Jorge Jimenez took over the creative team role of DC Comics’ main Batman book, they started things off with fanfare and death. In issue one, Batman #1, the pair seem to have killed longtime Batman villain The Penguin, placing the blame at the feet of someone other than the Dark Knight himself. The larger plot of their series moved on from this with Batman facing off against the new villain Fail Safe, but play in the standby story of each issue was Catwoman’s story directly linked to the demise of the Penguins, and now, his resurrection.

In the stand-up story, which features the art of Belen Ortega, Catwoman is tasked with finding Oswald Cobblepot’s children so that they may be present to read his last will. Batman #126 is mostly done with this, revealing two surprising heirs, but also noting that a bird sanctuary in Metropolis would have taken over the entire penguin fortune. This week’s release, Batman #127, reveals that Catwoman put the pieces together and realized that this bird sanctuary was a cover story, one that would allow Penguin to get a facelift and assume a new life.

Living in Metropolis under the name Paul Meredith (a combination of Paul Williams, who voiced the Penguin in Batman: The Animated Series, and Burgess Meredith, who played the character in the Adam West Batman series), Penguin is now the owner of a shopping flower, and sports a much shorter nose than he used to Readers to see it.

“I just want peace,” Oswald, who now features a blonde haircut, tells Selena. “I’m out. I’m not above begging, Catwoman. I don’t want to go back. Batman is an addiction we all have…just let me finally last..please?” As the scene ends and Catwoman promises to keep his secret, Penguin’s ultimate game becomes clear: Although he seems to really want to end his criminal life, he hopes his children can kill Batman and Catwoman for him.
