Team Rick and Morty Unpacks Evolution Cronenberg Dimension Jerry Season 6

Rick and Morty Fans were truly surprised by bringing Cronenberg Dimension back into the series with the first episode of Season 6, and the team behind the series has revealed what it means to develop their version of Jerry for Morty and his growth going forward. Season five ended up essentially opening the doors in terms of providing the kind of backstory and lore that fans have been waiting to see for so long, and season six really captured that by signaling some of the series’ biggest moments of the past with a whole new kind of light.

Rick and MortyThe sixth season premiere, “Solaricks,” brought the Cronenberg Dimension back to the franchise after briefly revisiting past seasons, but this time it was very different than it was before. As writer Nick Modry and series co-creator Dan Harmon explained on the topic in the in-episode special released by Adult Swim, developing the dimension and his version of Jerry to this bleak new level seen in the premiere was ultimately a way to get Morty to fully face his past. Leaving his family of origin behind for five seasons of light-hearted adventures.

Writer Nick Modry began “ultimately resetting portal travel to everyone having to confront their own past” before making it clear that it would help raise all kinds of new questions about Morty’s character as a result of that confrontation. “It’s really great to see Morty return to the world of Cronenberg focusing on the actual bleak reality of it. What does the apocalypse look like so long in the future? What happened in that world? What family was Morty so cruel left behind?” As for Jerry’s new car, it was a bleak mirror of Jerry’s growth as well.

“The last time we saw season one Jerry, he was almost like a nonverbal ogre,” said Dan Harmon, one of the series’ co-creators. “It’s now self-fulfilling. Morty is finally punished for abandoning his family because Jerry is perfect now.” It’s an emotional moment for Morty as he realizes how much pain he’s causing his family of origin, and even though he’s been told that nothing he does matters over the years, it’s very clear that he really does.

Season 6 seemed set up as a season of sequels for the titular duo, and so it raised all kinds of questions about what could come in the remaining episodes.
