The Mets get the worst possible injury news as the NL East bullets evaporate completely

The New York Mets are now tied on top of the NL East with the Braves, making it hard to swallow the news that Max Scherzer is headed to IL.

When the calendar turned to June for the 2022 MLB season, the New York Mets were rooted in pole position. The club had a 10.5-game advantage over the world champions Atlanta Braves in the Eastern National League and were playing like any baseball team.

Now at the beginning of September and the last full month of the season, the wheels have stalled. With Tuesday’s loss to the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta’s win in Oakland, the two teams are now tied at the top of the division, and the lead has faded completely.

The last thing the Mets need right now is something that will make it difficult to hold onto the NL East. However, this is the exact news they got.

On Wednesday morning, New York put forward Max Scherzer to IL with a left side injury after leaving his last start after five games. He will miss his scheduled start on Friday 9 September and will be re-evaluated thereafter.

Max Scherzer injury: Mets are in trouble with going to Illinois and division captain is now gone

Scherzer’s trip to Illinois would mark his second out of the squad this season, although the club appears to be signaling that this will be a much shorter absence.

With that said, the last thing the Mets need to miss is a start on one of the 1A/1B combination of Scherzer and deGrom, particularly when guys like Taijuan Walker seem to have started to slip a bit from their dominance early in the season, putting even more pressure on Aces to correct the ship when they take the hill.

Things got worse in New York in a hurry with a series loss to the Nationals and the Buccaneers now punctuated by three losses in a row, all in a bursting fashion for bad teams.

Under normal circumstances, Scherzer would be one of the men to help correct the ship on the spot. But now the Mets don’t have that option anymore, making this a dire situation to develop in New York as the Braves show no signs of backing down in their quest for the division crown.
