Xbox update adds a delayed social feature and more

If you’re one of the Xbox users who is tired of hearing every little noise your teammates’ headphones make when you’re playing a multiplayer game or at a party, then this console update is the one for you. Microsoft announced this week that volume suppression is now a standard feature for the console, but is only available on Xbox Series X | S, at the moment. Accompanying this is noise suppression another feature to round out the rest of the console update.

For those who mainly play on the PC and use services such as Discord or already have headphones with built-in noise suppression, this feature will not be much of a task. However, this will still be useful in the sense that when you break up with someone else who isn’t using some sort of noise suppression, they will now have the option to turn it on by default. Microsoft said the feature should take care of “noise like gamepad clicks, breathing, and background noise from your partying” and added that it plans to bring the option to more devices soon enough.

“If you want to keep some types of background noise like music in at your parties, you can also turn off noise cancellation,” Xbox team said. Simply open the guide, scroll to Parties and Conversations, and select Options. You can enable or disable noise cancellation. We’re excited to start rolling out this feature on Xbox Series X|S today, and we’ll bring it to more soon.

It’s also worth noting that this feature is only available in group chat and doesn’t seem to specifically affect in-game chat based on how the ad is worded. This means that public lobbies may still be full of potentially distracting noises, but your group conversations should at least be quieter.

Besides blocking noise, there’s another social feature that lets friends jump into a game directly from a clip you’ve sent them, a feature not unlike the one that’s been a selling point for Google Stadia’s cloud infrastructure.

“Millions of Xbox gamers are sharing game clips and screenshots with their friends through Link Sharing, which was released late last year,” the notes for this Xbox update said. “Now friends you share game clips and screenshots can not only see your screenshots, but can start playing right on their devices using cloud games.”

The latest Xbox update from Microsoft should be rolling out from Wednesday.
