Did She-Hulk only hint at a Mephisto MCU debut?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been completely shaken She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, With a Disney+ series full of wild moments and shocking Easter eggs. Along the way, the series featured some epic flicks and Marvel fun, including several characters who have already become a mainstay in the MCU. But the series’ fourth episode may have had one of the strangest Marvel references the show got — possibly the much-anticipated first character. Spoilers for Episode 4 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law less! Just see if you want to know!

The episode followed Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) representing Wong (Benedict Wong) in a lawsuit against Donnie Blaze (Rice Quiro), a stage magician who was irresponsibly using occult art on his show. Madisynn (Patty Guggenheim), one of Donnie’s victims, testifies in court that she was sent to the hell dimension, where she had to sign a pact with a demonic goat named Jake to escape. Madisynn couldn’t go into the details of this agreement, saying that Jake would “take her soul and everyone’s souls [she] Likes ‘otherwise.

While not directly confirmed, this scene can easily be interpreted as a hint to Mephisto, the dark lord who often rules the Marvel version of Hell. While Jake is not a pseudonym Mephisto uses in the comics, he does occasionally use the name similar to “Jack Scratch” – often sporting a goat-like form.

If this ends up being an illusion for Mephisto, it will arrive after fans have spent the better part of Phase 4 of the MCU speculating about when and how the character might appear. It started big in WandaVisionand also moved on to projects like What if…?loki And the Spider-Man: There’s no way home.

“We didn’t think this series needed something so bad,” WandaVision Jack Schaeffer explained the show in an interview last year. “I mean, the big bad is grief, you know, and that’s the story we were telling, and then we got the reward of a villain in the form of Agatha Harkness who ended up facilitating Wanda’s cure, so, yeah, I think we feel pretty good about that.”
