The Lion King announced to be a live-action sequel to Disney

We now know the first details about Disney’s computer-generated “live action” sequel the king lion. During a Walt Disney Studios panel at D23 Expo on Friday, director Barry Jenkins revealed that the film will be titled Mufasa: The Lion King, is expected to premiere in theaters in 2024. The film is said to be told in two different time frames, as Timon, Pumbaa, and Raviki, and will tell the story of Mufasa’s origin to a new cub, while seeing Mufasa rise to royalty. Those who attended the session were also treated to a brief trailer for the footage, and although it doesn’t look like it will be released online anytime soon, ComicBook.comJamie Jirak gave an exclusive description of what ensues.

“The teaser begins with the Mufasa cub. Not a drop of royal blood.” Some water washed it away. It ends with Timon and Pumbaa joking, “We’re not in this movie?” So they are.”

The film is directed by Jenkins with a script by Jeff Nathanson. Aaron Pierre will voice Mufasa in the new film, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices The Scar.

“I grew up with these characters, they mean a lot to me,” Jenkins explained in an interview last month. “I think the work of writer Jeff Nathanson and back is really helping kids and anyone who has loved this quality understand what it takes. Kings aren’t just born, they aren’t just made. They have to become who they are through a chain of events that they can relate to. Lots of people. So, from that point of view, it fits right in with everything else I’ve done. So I don’t feel any pressure, I just want to do well.”

“My clients sent me a lot of texts,” Jenkins told Chloe Zhao during a video interview in 2020. “When this came out, it was very confidential, I was very skeptical.” [Wang] And I said, “Holy, that’s good.” And as I continued reading, I pulled away from the side of my mind that said, “Oh, a filmmaker like you doesn’t make a movie like that,” and let myself get to where these characters are, this story, awesome. What really drove me across the line was that James, my partner in marriage, said, ‘You know? There’s something really interesting about this style of filmmaking that we haven’t done and not a lot of people have done. It was when I went back to the powers-that-be and said, ‘I’d love to do’ This, but I have to be able to do what I’m doing.”

As mentioned above, Mufasa: The Lion King It is expected to debut in theaters in 2024.
