9/11 remembrance: Portion of the World Trade Center unveiled as a memorial site in the City of Bellaire to mark 21 years!

Belair, TX (KTRK) – Sunday marks 21 years since the tragic attack on American soil in New York City. With honors flowing across the country, one here in Houston is a great reminder of the sacrifices made and lives lost.

“This is part of history. 21 years ago, it was an attack that happened in our country and we will remember it forever,” said Deacon Teitel, Beller Fire Chief.

“I know I will never forget. And I am absolutely sure that I know that their sacrifices were not in vain and that their courage will never be forgotten.”

A portion of the 11-foot-long I-beam from the World Trade Center has been donated to Belair City In 2017, right before Hurricane Harvey hit.

The former Beller Police Chief said during the honoring ceremony that he was in the police custody yard until a place was chosen to be a part of history.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey delayed the timeline for when the show was revealed.

The beam was then taken to the Lone Star Aviation Museum for an exhibition marking the two decades since the attack. In the spring of 2022, the steel piece was returned to the Belair and installed.

Five years have passed, and people throughout the community will have a memorial to visit. It’s currently between the Bellaire Fire Department and the library, in front of the Bellaire Police Department.

“This artifact is not only a reminder of the horrific events of 9/11, but also how a nation of different people and different faiths came together as Americans,” said Anissimo Mo Lopez, Bellaire Police Chief.

During the dedication ceremony, Mayor Andrew Friedberg said the steel artifacts are a reminder not to take liberties for granted.

Friedberg described it as a solemn testament to the fragility of human life and spoke of the piece as a reminder of the calling of first responders.
