family friend It is based on the harrowing true story of the Broberg family, whose daughter Jan was kidnapped multiple times over the course of years by the family’s manic, charismatic “friend.” Devoted to their religion, family, and community, the Brobergs were completely unprepared for the complex tactics their neighbor used to exploit their weaknesses, separate them from one another, and turn their daughter against them. This is the story of how their lives were permanently changed – and how they survived.

Showrunner Nick Antosca previously shared about the series, “It’s easy to judge the Broberg family story from the outside. Sometimes when people first hear it, they get defensive: How could these parents have let this happen? I’m not like them. Understood. It’s a surreal story. When I heard it for the first time, I sympathized with the weakness of the family, and I felt that I understood their story from the outside. But it stayed with me, and I wanted to understand from the inside – to know how their lives felt, to live in the experience of each family member, to see how they fell into such a net exotics, and to help audiences empathize with them as well.

“I hope people will come out of the series with a deeper understanding of the family and say, ‘Back then, in that place, they were like me. They made big mistakes, but loved their kids. And one of the manipulators took advantage of them.’ The series exists outside the typical categories of the genre. It’s a built thriller. About obsessive relationships, family drama, and the nightmare story of puberty.

“While working on this story and talking to others who worked on it, one thing became clear: It’s more connected than it initially appears. Brobergs’ story is an extreme point in a continuum that more of us are following than we realize. Another reason I can’t stop thinking Into this story is that after all of that, the Broberg family has grown. They have loved and forgiven. This is a story about survival, and a larger story about the American psyche and the institutions of family, religion, and society. And part of what makes the story extraordinary is not how strange it is, but the fact that the Broberg family told it on launch.

“It was a painful and complex story to work on. In addition to the thousands of pages of trial transcripts, FBI notes, interviews, and childhood diaries that we were able to use to tell the story, we had the privilege of working with Jan Broberg herself. We could not and would not be able to tell this story. Without Jan and her family’s blessing and participation. Thank you for watching.”

family friend It premieres on Peacock on October 6.
