Goats will remove unwanted vegetation in a wooded area of FM Law Park in southwest Houston, where parks and records officials plan to implement a new habitat restoration project.

The department says goats are one of the many ways the Department of Natural Resources manages habitats in city parks. Other methods are used, such as mowing, firing and manual removal. This division helps save costs, reduce chemicals and reduce fossil fuel emissions.

The department’s Department of Natural Resources manages the natural areas within Houston’s city parks, which total more than 17,000 acres of forest, prairie, and wetland habitat.

“The Houston Department of Parks and Recreation is excited about using a variety of approaches to help us nurture our important natural areas in the parks,” said Kenneth Allen, director of the department. “Using goats in this way is a safe and proven alternative to chemical treatments for weed control.”

Once the goats are removed from the vegetation, a staff from the Student Protection Society will come and remove the invasive species in the garden.

“Goats will be placed in areas with thicker vegetation to help open it up for our habitat crews to safely enter.”

“Goats are an important tool for HPARD to remove invasive vegetation in our habitat restoration areas,” said Kelly Ondasek, Houston Parks and Natural Resources Director at rec.

The FM Law Park habitat restoration project is funded by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in partnership with the Student Preservation Society.

The goats will be monitored 24/7 and will be electric fenced.

Visitors are asked not to feed or touch the goats if they plan to visit the park.
