The Razer Blade 15 (2022) shows that if nothing else, Razer is consistent. the last two times In my review of the Razer Blade 15, I noted that the 15-inch laptop looks great, works well, and costs a lot more than what it offers. This is the case here as well.
By now, gamers are probably familiar with the overall ballpark of the Razer Blade 15. It’s a stylish, slim and lightweight gaming laptop with a sleek design and powerful components. Generally, you pay extra to avoid the size and weight associated with gaming laptops. From this perspective, Blade 15 manages to deliver a satisfying gaming experience in a chassis that doesn’t weigh you down or overburden your entire desk.
The keyboard is still a sticking point, both because it’s too narrow and because it gets uncomfortably hot. It’s also hard to recommend some of the higher-end configurations – which can go over $4,000 – to any gaming laptop enthusiast.
However, Blade 15 is a reliable bet for PC gamers who want an elegant blend of style and performance. Read on for the full Razer Blade 15 review.
Razer Blade 15 (2022): Price and Configurations
There are currently 13 different Razer Blade 15 configurations, and they run in the $2,300 range. They all have 15.6-inch screens, but that’s where the similarities end.
At the bottom end is the Razer Blade 15 Base model, with an Intel Core i7-11800H CPU, 1080p display, 144Hz, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. This model costs $1800, which is a lot of money, given the mid-range specs. comparable MSI GS66 (Opens in a new tab) For comparison.
At the higher end is the Razer Blade 15 – UHD, with an Intel Core i9-12900H CPU, 4K display, 144Hz, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GPU, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. This model costs $4,000, which puts it out of reach for most potential laptop buyers.
Our review model was on trend, with an Intel Core i7-12800H CPU, 1440p display, 240Hz, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GPU, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. It costs $3,700, which makes it one of the most expensive gaming laptops you can buy. To put the price in perspective, its comparable (albeit slightly less powerful) Alienware m15 R7 configuration (Opens in a new tab) It costs $2800.
Razer Blade 15 (2022): Design
This year’s model of the Razer Blade 15 is generally similar to the Blade 15s that preceded it. It has a matte black body with an illuminated Razer logo on the lid, not anything else in the way of the decoration. The device measures 14.9 x 9.3 x 0.7 inches, which makes it very thin, and weighs 4.6 pounds, which makes it very light. I had no trouble storing it in a backpack for a day.
Describing the Blade 15 in greater detail seems almost superfluous, as it is such a precision machine by design. Aside from the Razer logo, nothing in it screams “gaming laptop”.
However, unlike more massive devices, the Blade 15 doesn’t have slots on the back, opting to have them all on the bottom instead. Perhaps this is the reason for the keyboard overheating while gaming.
Razer Blade 15 (2022): Ports
For a laptop, the Razer Blade 15 has an impressive variety of ports. On the left, you’ll find a power port, two USB-A ports, a USB-C port, and a 3.5mm audio port. On the right, you’ll find the Kensington lock port, an HDMI port, a USB-A port, and a USB-C port. The only real downside here is that if you have a large USB-C connector for a gaming peripheral, it will likely block one of the USB-A ports.
It’s also worth noting that while the USB-C ports can provide up to 15 watts of electricity, this isn’t enough to power the Blade 15 adequately. You will pretty much need to have the Blade 15 plugged into its own connector at all times to maintain peak performance.
Razer Blade 15 (2022): keyboard and touchpad
As with previous Blade models, my biggest criticism of this year’s Razer Blade 15 is that the keyboard and touchpad aren’t very good. The keyboard sacrifices a full inch and a half on either side to accommodate the Blade 15’s speakers, which means the keys feel cramped—especially the half-sized arrow keys up and down. On a laptop of this size, there is simply no reason to press buttons so much.
The touchpad is also large and very sensitive. Not only is the touchpad difficult to handle, but due to its size, it always got right in the palm of my hand. This resulted in a lot of formatting errors while trying to type, and even some unfortunate double-clicks while gaming. There are ways to mitigate these issues, but they are frustrating nonetheless.
Razer Blade 15 (2022): Demo
All Razer Blade 15s have a 15.6-inch screen. Beyond that, details can vary greatly. They range from 1080p to 4K and from 144Hz to 360Hz. It will take a long time to break down every possible configuration; Suffice it to say that you can prioritize resolution or frame rate, so choose accordingly. (I like accuracy, because it’s better for multimedia and productivity, but that’s just me).
Here’s how the Blade 15 compares to other gaming laptops that Tom’s Guide reviewed and tested recently:
Razer Blade 15 (2022) | Asus ROG Strix Scar Edition | MSI Bravo 15 B5DD
brightness (lice) | 252 | 263 | 251 |
sRGB color gamut (%) | 123 | 116 | 67 |
Delta E | 0.25 | 0.21 | 0.25 |
Razer holds its own against similar devices like the Asus ROG Strix Scar, and outperforms cheaper devices like MSI Bravo 15 B5DDSometimes, by a large margin. The Blade 15’s 123% of the sRGB color gamut is particularly impressive. In practical terms, it gives the screen a bright, vibrant and accurate color palette.
Razer Blade 15 (2022): gaming performance
The Razer Blade 15 has good gaming performance, whether you prefer to play in 1080p and enjoy faster frame rates, or enjoy the full 1440p capabilities of the screen. Here’s how the Blade 15 stacks up for up to two other gaming laptops, measured at 1080p fps:
Razer Blade 15 | Asus ROG Strix Scar Edition | MSI Bravo 15 B5DD
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | 77 | 77 | 32 |
dirt 5 | 67 | 84 | 30 |
Grand Theft Auto V | 106 | 115 | 40 |
Shadow of the Tomb Raider | 92 | 95 | 33 |
To be strictly fair, the Blade 15 has yet to compare in performance as the ROG Strix Scar. However, the gap looked a little narrower when we compared games at the Blade 15’s original 1440p resolution. While the Strix Scar Edition still beats the Blade 15, the difference was within 4fps for each title tested. For example, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla ran at 62 fps on the Strix Scar and 60 fps on the Blade 15. Furthermore, the Blade 15 dropped below 60 fps on just one title: Dirt 5, scoring 58 frames per second.
In my qualitative tests at 1440p, I also had consistently good performance in just about every game, especially when I let the Nvidia GeForce Experience deal with optimization. Age of Empires IV Ran about 90 fps; Final Fantasy XIV It ran around 60 frames per second. Cyberpunk 2077 movie It wasn’t good either, with 45fps, but that was also with ray tracing turned on.
The only game that gave me a big problem was Doom Eternal, and I still can’t explain why. The frame rate was highly variable, jumping from 45 to 60 fps and back again repeatedly, stuttering and lagging as it happened. Doom Eternal also seems to be the game that pushed Blade 15 to the extreme, given how hot the GPU is, so the two can be linked. In practice, you may have to turn down some of the graphical settings if you want a more comfortable experience.
Razer Blade 15 (2022): Productivity Performance
As a gaming laptop with a high-quality display, the Razer Blade 15 has no problem tackling everyday productivity tasks:
Razer Blade 15 | Asus ROG Strix Scar Edition | MSI Bravo 15 B5DD
Geekbench 5.4 (Synthetic Performance Benchmark) | 9750 | 13209 | 6676 |
Copying 25 gigabytes per second | 1,866 | 1,522 | 433 |
Handbrake video encoding (minutes:seconds) | 7:26 | 4:42 | 7:55 |
Again, in terms of benchmarks, the Blade 15 beats the cheaper MSI, but doesn’t quite match up to the similar Asus. In practice, this may not mean much. I’ve used the Blade 15 as my normal working machine for about a week, and haven’t had any major problems, except for the keyboard and touchpad. Even when I had a word processor, two chat programs, two Internet browsers (with at least a dozen tabs), a mail client and a music player running simultaneously, I couldn’t use more than half of the system’s RAM.
The laptop is also light on bloatware. You can use Razer Synapse software to reprogram the keys, and control the RGB lighting for each key, as well as the illuminated logo on the lid. Synapse also controls power usage profiles. It’s straightforward software compatible with every piece of Razer gear.
Razer Blade 15 (2022): Battery life and heat
Unfortunately, the Razer Blade 15 doesn’t last long on a charge. To complicate matters further, it gets very hot when plugged into a power source:
Razer Blade 15 | Asus ROG Strix Scar Edition | MSI Bravo 15 B5DD
Battery Life – Productivity (minutes: seconds) | 4:47 | 6:20 | 6:20 |
Battery Life – Games (minutes: seconds) | 1:04 | 1:10 | 1:14 |
Temperature – Productivity (°F) | 107 | 104 | 94 |
Temperature – Gaming (°F) | 140 | 128 | 115 |
While the Blade 15 doesn’t last very long on battery while gaming, there’s also no gaming laptop we’ve tested lately, so that’s not a big deal. However, the productivity life of just four hours and 47 minutes is a bit poor, considering it wouldn’t last even one cross-country trip. Similar machines offer an hour and a half surcharge.
As mentioned earlier, the device runs extremely hot especially while gaming, with temperatures reaching 140 degrees Fahrenheit. It is standard practice to recommend a separate file gaming mouse For laptops, but this is one of the first I tested where I might recommend a separate one gaming keyboard like that.
Razer Blade 15 (2022): Verdict
If you want to buy the Razer Blade 15, you should know up front that it is expensive, runs hot and doesn’t have a great keyboard. However, if those devices aren’t a deal breaker, the device gets a solid recommendation. The compact and elegant design goes a long way, as does good gaming performance.
Tom’s Guide is currently reviewing similar hardware from Acer and Alienware, and it might be worth waiting to see how they stack up. Other than that, though, the Blade 15 has been one of the most consistent gaming laptops on the market for years, and the 2022 variant continues that trend.
