As the world mourns Queen Elizabeth II, honors flow in for her extraordinary duty and devotion to the nation. However, many also remembered and highlighted her cheerfulness, gentle sense of humor and talent for dialects. She stunned the nation with her hilarious drawing of James Bond, and so proud that our “noble and generous Queen” can also represent our world-famous devastating humor. Speaking to the House of Commons, Boris Johnson described the Queen’s “innocent joy” at the reactions to it all during private conversations with the King.
Paddington is back on TV tonight, preceded by a retelling of that iconic moment at Buckingham Palace.
Back in June, millions of viewers as well as hundreds of thousands thronged outside Buckingham Palace and the Mall – and the royal family huddled in stands opposite a statue of Queen Victoria – paused as one in shock as Her Majesty appeared on screen for a special moment. Which was completely hidden from everyone.
In a magnificent room inside Buckingham Palace, the Queen was sitting down to tea – with a very special guest.
Participating in the Parliamentary tribute to the King, Johnson said: “Today there are countless people in this country and around the world who have experienced the same sudden arrival of unexpected emotion. Millions of us are trying to understand why we feel such a deep, personal, almost familial sense of loss. Partly because it has always been a constant human reference point in British life.”
But he also elicited laughter when he recalled two extraordinary scenes that astonished the world. First, the stunning 2012 moment when the Queen greeted James Bond at Buckingham Palace and then, astonishingly, appeared to have jumped from a helicopter over the Olympic Stadium, before appearing at the royal box in the same pink dress.
Johnson said: “I remember her innocent joy over a decade ago, after the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, when I told her that the leader of a friendly Middle Eastern country who seemed to think she had actually jumped from a helicopter in pink dress and parachute in the stadium.”
“I remember her equal happiness when she was told just a few weeks ago that she had been hit hard in her performance with Paddington Bear.”
For seventy years on the throne, the queen brought great joy to the nation. How wonderful to know that she also felt herself.
