existing He’s so close to making his triumphant comeback on Netflix with the first season four release, it’s going to be emotional. After Grace’s shocking death in the Season 3 finale, Season 4 will mark a time jump, and that won’t be the only change. As he deals with his wife’s death, Ben will sadly rock a “sad beard,” and Josh Dallas has opened up about that as well as the character’s mental state early in the season.

As the series has been going on for two years, it’s only natural that a lot of things have changed since the events of the third season finale. Between Cal’s five-year return, Grace’s tragic death, and Angelina Eden’s kidnapping, there are plenty of questions fans have to consider regarding what happened in the meantime. while talking with EW Around existing In Season 4 (which we know a lot about), Josh Dallas makes it clear that Ben will still be reeling from his wife’s death and ponder some big questions:

Ben questions everything, not just vocations but God, the universe and his goodness versus evil. The loss of grace left this enormous void in him and a deep depth of anger. The thing about anger is that it calls to get around it. It can take away your light and leave you nothing to offer. It makes you hurt those who love you, and Ben does a little bit of that. I think a part of him wants the grief to continue because he thinks that if he leaves him and heals his grief, he will somehow lose grace forever.
