Bill Belichick knows Lamar Jackson’s contract can change everything

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has admitted the pressure is on the Baltimore Ravens to back quarterback Lamar Jackson with a massive contract.

Bill Belichick is often not a multi-worded man, unless he is asked about the history of football.

To some extent, that’s what he commented on when asked about Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson’s pocket abilities.

Since entering the league, Jackson has faced significant criticism for the way his quarterback plays – even after he was unanimously voted the NFL Player of the Year in 2019. Jackson has the ability to run and pass the ball, although there have been criticisms of his passing abilities.

Jackson answered them all in a 42-38 loss to the Miami Dolphins that saw Jackson complete 21 of 29 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, Jackson’s incredibly effective day was overshadowed by Tua Tagovailoa’s brutal 469-yard performance that resulted in six touchdowns.

But Belichick saw what Jackson could do. So when asked if Jackson had finally answered questions about his pocket ability, Belichick appeared to endorse the idea that Jackson deserved the historic contract he had sought over the past few months.

“Without a doubt,” Belichick said Whether or not Jackson’s play answered any outstanding questions about his pocket abilities. “He is the type of player, the MVP candidate. I think he answered them more than just. But, we will see what his contract is, and that will answer them.”

Bill Belichick is considering negotiating Lamar Jackson’s contract with the Ravens

Belichick isn’t suggesting anything unknown in the NFL world: money is the only talk that matters, which is why contract negotiations between Jackson and the Ravens have spoken out loud about the different expectations that Jackson and his organization seem to have.

Jackson defended a contract that offered guaranteed money similar to that of Deshaun Watson, with Watson owning a fully secured contract worth $230 million. Here is what the crows were said to have offered to Jackson, which he declined:

  • 5-year contract worth $250 million
  • $133 million guaranteed upon signature
  • AAV worth $50 million

If Jackson is considering other options, as some suggest, they may all be a negotiating tactic—a tactic that Belichick has just helped him with.

One negative consequence of courtesy Belichick is that the Patriots coach is meticulous in his wording. When Belichick praises a player on an opposing team, it is usually the weapon he hopes to snatch from his opponent.

Sunday will reveal whether or not Belichick will be able to successfully counter Jackson’s abilities, but at least Belichick is putting pressure on the Ravens to answer this question: How much does Lamar Jackson mean to them?
