Toronto – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has agreed to Canada scrapping a vaccine requirement for people entering the country at the end of September, an official familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Canada, like the United States, requires foreign nationals to be vaccinated against COVID-19 upon entering the country. No change in the mandate is expected in the United States in the near term.

Unvaccinated foreign travelers who are currently allowed to enter Canada are subject to mandatory arrival tests and a 14-day quarantine.

The official said Trudeau has agreed to allow a cabinet order to enforce mandatory COVID-19 vaccination requirements at the border that expires on September 30. The official said earlier this week that the prime minister needed to give final approval. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Trudeau’s liberal government is still deciding whether to keep the requirement for passengers to wear face masks on trains and planes.

Unprotected professional athletes such as Major League baseball players will be allowed to play in Toronto in the playoffs if the Blue Jays do post-season work. They are not currently allowed to cross the border into Canada.
