Celebrating a century of talent: ABC highlights TV legend Norman Lear with all-star special ‘100 Years of Music and Laughter’!

ABC has a special feature a century later! It is about a television pioneer who used comedy to push the envelope in series after series. Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music and Laughter is a celebration of one man’s life and legacy.

“I would be as surprised and happy — or upset — as everyone else watching,” said Lear.

Norman Lear is still cracking jokes at the age of 100. The man behind classic sitcoms like “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “Good Times,” and “The Jeffersons” is the subject of a two-hour TV special featuring talks, comedy shows, and speeches. And some surprising encounters.

“You know, we’ve been instructed so many times that this is TV show first and second to party. So it’s hard to walk in and I think we’ve done a really great job, you know, getting together also you know, some of the people that are currently in Norman’s life and some of those who are just Collaborators and fans,” said Executive Producer Brent Miller.

Miller has been with Lear for a long time now. He appears to have inherited Lear’s work ethic.

“I don’t know that anyone who works with a 100-year-old man could dream of retiring,” Miller said.

Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music and Laughter will also feature performances of his classic hits, including “Those Were the Days” written by Lee Adams and Charles Strauss for “All in the Family.”

“I will never forget the first time I heard it,” said Lear. “It was 100% of their own making.” “And I – this was a gift of gifts and all these years it has been my pleasure to give this gift to the American people.”

“Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music and Laughter” airs Thursday on ABC, and then the next day on Hulu.
